Job Summary
Prepare state payroll tax returns and maintain organization’s state tax records and financial statements. Prepare filings for state tax refunds and research inquiries from government agencies regarding filings, compliance, and other claims. Research methods and present proposals to lessen tax liability through the use of laws and regulations. Analyze state tax records and reports and assist in preparation. Maintain knowledge of all applicable state tax laws and regulations. Considered highly skilled and proficient in discipline. Conduct complex, important work under minimal supervision and with wide latitude for independent judgment.

Responsibilities
* Prepare and file state payroll tax returns and withholding deposits, process Forms W-4 and applicable state tax withholding forms.
* Must meet critical payroll reporting and other deadlines.
* Participate in annual year-end state payroll tax processing and W-2 submissions to state tax agencies.
* Gather information and process state sales tax refund filing.
* Ensure out of state sales tax compliance requirements.
* Perform general ledger reconciliations, review withholding transactions, and process journal entries and corrections to resolve discrepancies or errors.
* Interact with customers and tax agencies.
* Interpret University policies and authority sources and provide instructions and guidance to stakeholders.
* Review state tax processes and procedures and recommend improvements for best practices and compliance.
* Provide excellent customer service and timely support to stakeholders.
* Contribute to other assigned departmental tasks and projects.
Minimum Qualifications
**EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT :** 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
**Accountants (Tax), III :** Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.
Preferences
Experience in payroll tax accounting.
