    The ideal candidate would be able to implement complex analysis, tools, and applications into business processes using R, and possibly other software solutions such as Power BI; use data modeling and techniques to provide risk insights; and organize data effectively in databases including efficient SQL queries and adherence to architecture best practices.

    POSITION PURPOSE:

    Responsible for the analyses/evaluation and development of models for potential transactions to improve TVA’s overall system cost. Considered subject matter expert in the analysis of information utilized in the development of decision models and tools designed to facilitate and increase value to TVA for power, commodity and capital project deals. Develops and communicates strategy and execution guidelines and analysis of physical and financial coal, gas and power deals. Evaluation, integration, and interpretation of results of models/data produced by Resource Planning & Strategy, Power Operations, Transmission & Power Supply, Distributed Energy Resources, and Financial Services. Utilizes analyses to recommend strategies to optimize economic benefits of various deals to TVA. Trains and shares knowledge with less experienced Portfolio Analytics team members as well customers and stakeholders. Interfaces with senior management to qualitatively communicate quantitative concepts and models described above to optimize decision making and minimize cost to TVA. The incumbent is expected to complete accurate and robust analysis; is responsible for improving existing capabilities and knowledge; and creating new products, processes, and models that meet customer and business needs. The incumbent is accountable for building communication and collaboration channels with our customers and support organizations, understanding the big picture, building technical skills and working independently to produce complete results. Some level of leadership is expected in directing the activities of more junior analysts.

    PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    The analyst performs the following in a career-level position, with limited supervision:

    1. Works closely with enterprise-wide customers to analyze energy contracts, logistics, post op, fuel, power supply and generating asset decisions for most economic alternative.

    2. Evaluates future markets and analyzes information from research/models to ensure and recommend sound business decisions.

    3. Evaluates output of analysis performed by System Planning and others to support business decisions, trading strategies, and marketing plans.

    4. Provides analytical support of risk management associated with analysis and recommendation of mitigating strategies.

    5. Assists in the development of strategies for future TVA markets; advises operations personnel.

    6. Utilizes and develops models, tools and systems for portfolio management, deal evaluation and asset decisions.

    7. Supports analytical and cross functional teams with ad hoc evaluations.

    8. Coordinates development and maintenance of post-op reporting, including trending and recommending corrective actions.

    9. Coordinates and communicate evaluation results with other organizations from analysts to executives as needed.

    10. Based on results of evaluations, recommends policy and strategy related to fuel supply, power purchases and sales, asset build/acquisition and divestiture, and asset capital investment to optimize TVA’s portfolio.

    11. Verifies, maintains, develops, and improves economic analysis models and tools. Performs reporting of operational activities for tracking, monitoring, and operational improvements.

    12. Supports cross functional teams and provides advice/technical review of the more complex analysis/evaluations.

    13. Provides influence on decisions on TVA’s book and portfolio for prompt month and out.

    14. Represents senior management on established projects to resolve key business issues.

    15. Qualitatively communicate quantitative concepts and models described above to management to support budget, hedging, strategic, credit, and capital decisions. Interface with front, middle, and back office groups.

    16. Train and share knowledge with others across TVA, including economic analysis training.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Education— Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, mathematics, economics, engineering, or related field. Advanced degree is desirable.

     

    Experience— Minimum of 5 years of work experience required. Experience in strategy development, analytical and/or financial evaluations and modeling is desirable.

     

    Certification/License, etc— License/Certification in relevant field is desirable

     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities— Must have a good knowledge of theories & applications in areas of power system economic, generation & transmission characteristics, economic dispatch, & bulk power marketing practices. Familiarity with analytical packages commonly used in model development such as Matlab, R, or other is desired. Proficiency in oral and written communications is necessary, as well as, Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Candidate may be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on position/access requirements and essential job functions.
