Job Title: Resident Engineer
Job Description
The Resident Engineer serves as the critical technical bridge between our steering column program and , ensuring smooth, accurate, and fully aligned execution with GM’s engineering expectations. The Resident Engineer plays a vital role in translating requirements, swiftly resolving issues, and maintaining strong relationships with GM engineering teams. This position directly impacts program timing, product quality, and customer satisfaction, making it essential to protecting our reputation and strengthening long-term partnerships.
Responsibilities
+ Serve as the on-site technical representative, supporting approximately 50% on-site presence at the customer.
+ Participate in GM engineering meetings, design reviews, and cross-functional discussions.
+ Communicate GM requirements, feedback, and program updates clearly and promptly to internal teams.
+ Build strong working relationships with GM engineers, program managers, and purchasing teams.
+ Support the mechanical steering column program through all development phases.
+ Apply mechanical engineering fundamentals to evaluate design changes, troubleshoot issues, and support root-cause analysis.
+ Assist in reviewing CAD data, drawings, and specifications.
+ Track engineering changes, validation activities, and program milestones.
+ Support DFMEA/PFMEA discussions and ensure alignment with requirements.
+ Identify risks, open issues, and potential roadblocks early, and escalate appropriately.
+ Coordinate with design, quality, testing, and manufacturing teams to drive timely solutions.
+ Prepare concise technical summaries, status reports, and action-item updates for and internal teams.
+ Work closely with internal engineering teams to ensure deliverables meet expectations.
+ Support prototype builds, validation testing, and launch readiness activities.
+ Participate in problem-solving sessions using methodologies like 8D, fishbone, and 5-why.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field preferred.
+ Strong understanding of mechanical fundamentals.
+ Previous experience working at General Motors is required.
+ Solid understanding of GM-specific processes, including DVP&R development, DFMEA methodology, and GM release procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience with GM e‑release systems is a plus.
+ Familiarity with steering systems, chassis components, or mechanical assemblies is beneficial.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ann Arbor, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $48.00/hr.
