Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The UNC Charlotte Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CEE ) invites applications for a tenured position at the Associate Professor level in Structural Engineering, with an appointment as the Honeywell Distinguished Scholar in Infrastructure. The expectation is successful promotion to Professor during the initial 5-year term based on demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, and service. The endowment for this position provides for a salary supplement and support of the research and scholarship of the appointee. The anticipated start date is August 10, 2026.
Candidates will be responsible for (1) developing and maintaining a nationally/internationally recognized research program, including securing external funding and publishing high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals; (2) contributing to undergraduate and graduate curricula, including core courses in structural analysis and design, as well as developing new courses aligned with infrastructure systems and emerging trends; (3) mentoring and advising research assistants and postdoctoral scholars; (4) engaging in departmental, university, and professional service, including mentoring junior faculty and serving on technical committees; and (5) fostering interdisciplinary partnerships within the university and externally with stakeholders in government, industry, and non-profits.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team committed to advancing innovative civil structures and energy infrastructure. The ideal candidate would have expertise that complements existing strengths of the Structures faculty to facilitate partnerships in new areas of research, utilize key research laboratories, and contribute to the College of Engineering’s established research centers, including the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center ( EPIC ) and the Charlotte Aviation Innovation and Research ( AIR ) Institute. The Department boasts state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, including the EPIC High Bay Structural Lab that offers extensive experimental capabilities and dedicated support personnel for large-scale structural testing.
Minimum Experience / Education:
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field.
Candidates must exhibit a strong record of scholarly achievement commensurate with appointment at the Associate Professor level, including a robust publication history in high- impact journals, successful grant funding, and evidence of research impact, as well as demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring at the university level. Candidates should exhibit potential for advancement to the rank of Professor in a near-term horizon, as evidenced by their trajectory in research productivity, leadership, and contributions to the field. Demonstrated evidence of successful collaboration and leadership of multiple investigator proposals and projects is desirable.
