Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a professional environmental health position working within the Environmental Public Health Section (EPH) of the Okaloosa County Health Department (OCHD). Position requires the performance of tasks including application and project reviews, site inspections and surveys, project evaluations and sanitary nuisance investigations and assessments, environmental sample collection, data entry and analysis and report writing. This position performs duties in accordance with Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code, EH Manual 150-4, and internal Okaloosa County Health Department standards.
This position will serve as the subject matter expert in the Biomedical Waste Program. Will assist with consultations with customers to training for inspectors. Performs routine inspections and other basic regulatory activities in the Biomedical Waste Program. Consults with facility operators and owners to ensure compliance with 64E-16 FAC and Chapter 381 Florida Statutes. Performs other regulatory duties, such as re-inspections, complaint inspections, closure inspections, and preparation of documentation for enforcement action. This position will perform data entry of information gathered during regulatory work into EHDMA and the state database and other spreadsheets/databases. This position will be the lead worker in the biomedical waste program.
As a certified food hygiene program inspector position, performs routine inspections in the Food Hygiene program. Consults with facility operators and owners to ensure compliance with 64E-11 Florida Administrative Code (FAC), Chapter 381 Florida Statutes and FDA Food Code 2013. Performs other regulatory duties such as re-inspections, complaint inspections, basic plan review, construction inspections, and preparation of documentation for enforcement action. This position will perform data entry of information gathered during regulatory work into EHDMA and state database/EHD and other local spreadsheets and databases.
Conducts inspections and investigations in the mobile home/lodging park and recreational vehicle park program. Performs inspections and investigations to minimize the risk of injury and illness in this residential environment. Of primary concern and importance are safe drinking water supply, proper sewage disposal, a safe and disease-free swimming pool (where provided), and assurances that the establishment is free from garbage, harmful insects, and rodent infestations.
Conducts Group Care inspections of regulated facilities to ensure compliance with regulations. Ability to perform routine and construction inspections to ensure proper design and operation of permitted facilities. These inspections will be conducted in accordance with Florida Administrative Code and Florida Statutes.
In the tanning facilities program performs routine, reinspection, construction, change of owner, complaint, consultation, and other inspections to evaluate and ensure the safe and sanitary operation of tanning facilities. Will issue field stop use order pursuant to Chapter 120.54 Florida Statutes. Maintains a professional working knowledge of 64E-17 Florida Administrative Code.
Field inspector for the public swimming pools and bathing places program for the Okaloosa County Health Department. Performs routine, reinspection, change of owner, complaint, consultation, and other inspections of swimming pools, spas, wading pools, special purpose pools, water activity pools, and recreational attraction pools and public bathing places. Conducts water quality monitoring and sample result interpretation.
Investigates sanitary nuisance complaints and prepares reports, legal notices and other documents relating to environmental issues. Initiates enforcement actionis by drafting non-compliance letters, warning letters, and assists with other enforcement documents. Represents the department in meetings and negotiations with other state agencies, federal agencies and other parties to resolve the departments concerns with proposed activities, projects and land use. This position will assist the lead rabies surveillance inspector by helping with investigations and conducting initial and final quarantine inspections.
Performs all other duties as assigned in support of the Agency’s mission and vision.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Qualifications:
+ Must maintain a valid U.S. Drivers’ License.
+ Must become certified as a Food Inspector (CEHP) with 6 months of employment.
+ Must attain a Certified Pool Operator status within 10 months.
+ Bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental science/health or a physical or biological science. Major coursework must have at least 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of coursework in science.
