Position Summary:
The Educational SignLanguage Interpreter is a trained professional who facilities communicationbetween deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others within an educationalsetting. Often, American Sign Language (ASL) is used to interpret spokenlanguage into sign language and vice versa, which ensures students haveaccommodations to classroom instruction, activities and learning discussions.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Facilitate effective communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and hearing individuals in educational settings using American Sign Language and other appropriate communication modes.
+ Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular activities to ensure full access to the educational environment.
+ Collaborate with teachers and staff to understand lesson content, instructional goals, and student needs to provide accurate and contextually appropriate interpretation.
+ Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards and the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
+ Support student engagement and participation while maintaining the role of a neutral communication facilitator.
+ Prepare for assignments by reviewing lesson plans, vocabulary, and subject matter to ensure accurate interpretation.
+ Provide interpreting services for parent-teacher conferences, IEP meetings, and other school-related events as needed.
+ Monitor and report on student communication needs and progress to appropriate educational team members.
+ Participate in professional development and training to maintain certification and enhance interpreting skills.
+ Adapt interpreting techniques to accommodate students’ language preferences, developmental levels, and learning styles.
Minimum Requirements
+ Proficiency in American Sign Language
+ Associates degree or Bachelors degree in interpreting, deaf studies or related field, preferred
+ State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable)
+ Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
+ Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification ( as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
+ Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
