    Job Description:

    Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a _Station Structural Technician Apprentice or Journeyman_ to join our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Construction crews. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power.     What does a Station Structural Technician Apprentice or Journeyman do for us?

     

    They travel around Idaho Power’s service territories to perform construction and maintenance work on overhead and underground distribution, transmission lines/bus, and apparatus within substations. They install substation and power plant ground grids, foundations, structures, breakers, transformers, bus, high and low-voltage cables, and other apparatus. **Note:** This position may require working a hitch schedule (8 days on the job, 6 days off) every other week.

    A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

    Knowledge of:

    + OSHA regulations, chemical safety, and electrical safety related work practices

    + Rigging and fall protection

    + Bucket truck and man lift rescue

    + Utility system practices and field operation practices

    + Substation and power plant construction, safety procedures, and maintenance techniques

    + Safe operation of hand and power tools used in construction

    + Structural and mechanical drawings (i.e. elevations, plans, sections, details)

    + Heavy equipment operation (i.e. bucket truck, boom truck, backhoe, line bed, skid steer, and man lift)

    + Power transformers, load tap changers, potential and current transformers, power circuit breakers, metal-clad switchgear, circuit switchers, disconnect and air brake switches, synchronous condensers, and series and shunt capacitors

    + Proper use of transit, surveying practices, and laying out station foundation baselines and elevations

    + Forming, pouring, and finishing of concrete

    + Steel and aluminum welding

    + Cutting torch

    + Safe grounding practices and mitigation of induced voltage

    + Specific control systems, schemes and equipment utilized in distribution and transmission voltage level systems

    + Stations and power plant equipment installation adhering to internal Stations Engineering & Design and Stations Construction Specifications

    + Personal computer use and basic software

    Skills in:

    + Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication

    + Problem identification, problem solving, and troubleshooting

    + Operating test equipment

    + Occasionally perform switching

    + Regular trigonometry utilization

    + Organization and time management

    Ability to:

    + Read and understand station drawings

    + Properly correct and document changes to station drawings

    + Establish and maintain effective working relationships

    + Work in a team environment, as well as independently and be self-motivated and flexible

    + Work with a high degree of accountability

    + Meet established project deadlines

    + Apply established guidelines and use good judgment and initiative in resolving work problems

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Apprentice

    Education:

    + High school diploma or GED

    AND

    + Vocational degree in a mechanical, electronics, or industrial construction discipline

    + An equivalent combination of education, work experience, related formal apprenticeship training, or military training

    + Currently employed as an Idaho Power Pre-Apprentice Stations Technician

    Experience:

    + 2 or more years work experience in an electrical, mechanical, or industrial construction field

    Licenses & Certifications:

    + Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

    + Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

    + Valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain prior to hire

    + Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days of hire

     

    Journeyman

    Education:

    + High school diploma or GED

    AND

    + Vocational degree in a mechanical maintenance, electronics, or construction discipline

    OR

    + Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship

    OR

    + An equivalent combination of education, work experience, or military training

    Experience:

    + 5 or more years of work experience in an electrical, mechanical, or industrial construction field, _including_ at least 2 years of journey-level experience in substation maintenance or construction

    OR

    + Completion of a Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Substation program

    Licenses & Certifications:

    + Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

    + Valid DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

    + Valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain prior to hire

    + Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days of hire

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    This position requires the ability to occasionally bend, stoop squat, crouch, climb ladders, twist, kneel, balance and reach, and rarely crawl; occasionally lift above-shoulder items weighing up to 50 lbs., and waist-high and knee-high items weighing up to 75 lbs.; occasionally push or pull items using force of up to 50 lbs. and rarely up to 125 lbs.; occasionally carry with one hand items weighing up to 50 lbs. or two hands items weighing up to 75 lbs. Occasionally use fine and gross hand manipulation when working with tools or equipment; occasionally use foot controls when driving. Job frequently requires working outdoors in adverse weather conditions and occasionally in confined spaces. Applicant must perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property.     ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    Immediately enroll in the Stations Technician Apprenticeship Program. Additional job and safety related training may be required.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    This position requires extensive travel across Idaho Power’s service area. The work schedule for this position may change week to week. Typical work schedule includes working four 10-hour days each week or working eight 10-hour days in back-to-back weeks. Each workday may be an out-of-town, overnight stay. This position requires the ability to work overtime and weekends for emergencies when business need requires. Apprentices work in various conditions, including confined spaces, heights of over 80 feet, and inclement weather.

     

    Must abide by Idaho Power Company's safety rules and regulations. Complete required Company and safety training.
