    DEPARTMENTStudent Services

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position reports to the Director of Special Education and is responsible for participating in the development and support of students by providing counseling and guidance-related activities to students who are Blind/Visually Impaired and their families.

    JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Serves as a school counselor for students who are Blind/Visually Impaired, providing counseling to students individually and in groups; monitoring students’ academic and personal growth; providing counseling and crisis intervention to students as required; participating in the diagnostic process by providing developmental history, relevant family information, student adaptive behavior information, etc.

    • Demonstrates knowledge/skill in the areas of task analysis, assessment, behavior management, organization/planning, current technology practices, curriculum development, parent relations, and teamwork.

    • Manages all ICAP requirements, transcript updates, and credit monitoring to ensure students remain on track for graduation.

    • Coordinates SAT/ACT preparation, including scheduling, test readiness supports, and communication with students and families.

    • Assists in schoolwide climate and culture efforts, including Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

    • Serves as a resource to parents, students, staff, and community agencies.

    • Consults with parents and school staff (including teachers and residential staff) regarding students’ social, emotional, behavioral, and educational needs as related to learning and achievement.

    • Provides support and guidance to the residential program and contributes to the rotation of on-call services when needed.

    • Participates in the development and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEP), Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA), and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).

    • Consults with and acts as a liaison between CSDB and other agencies as needed (e.g., school district mental health personnel).

    • Assists with planning and implementation of schoolwide programs related to mental health, counseling, social-emotional learning, and prevention.

    • Participates in activities related to professional development and provides training/workshops as appropriate, including presentation of information to CSDB / LEA (Local Education Agency) staff and parents as requested.

    • Coordinates effectively with other staff in providing student support services, supporting school reform and strategic planning, and positively contributing to co-curricular activities.

    • Works closely with the School for the Blind School Psychologist to coordinate services for social-emotional development and support for students.

    • Acts as a contributing, collaborative member of the CSDB Mental Health Team.

    • Collaborates with the Mainstream Coordinator to plan student mainstream programming and ensure students’ accessibility needs are met in mainstream classrooms.

    • Positively serves as a team member of the Student Services team and the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) as a whole; participates in regular team and departmental meetings, Professional Learning Community meetings, and school and instructional meetings as required.

    • Provides parent consultation and participates in selected parent-focused activities.

    • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Master’s Degree in (School) Counseling, (School) Social Work, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university.

    + Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado as a Special Service Provider, endorsed as a School Counselor, School Social Worker, or related field (must achieve a passing score on the Colorado state-approved content assessment).

    + Experience working with and providing counseling to students (i.e., in a school setting) and their families.

    + Preferred: Experience working with and providing counseling to students with special needs or who are Blind/Visually Impaired.

    + Proficiency in, or commitment to work toward and complete, the Basic Emergency Communication Course in American Sign Language.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    + Knowledge of and ability to use counseling techniques and interventions with students from age three to twenty-one who are Blind/Visually Impaired.

    + Knowledge of accessibility needs of students who are Blind/Visually Impaired.

    + Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, including but not limited to email, internet, word processing, electronic calendars, presentation development, spreadsheets, and databases; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed with or without direct support from CSDB.

    + Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, including those who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing, using a variety of communication modes.

    + Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback.

    + Ability to work cooperatively with others and participate effectively in a team setting.

    + Strong, positive interpersonal skills.

    Organizational Relationships

    + Reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Special Education.

    Terms of Employment

    + Full-time; scheduled to work the standard number of days in the academic year (as per the established School Calendar, currently 195 days, August through June).

    + Annual base salary shall be established pursuant to the Teacher Salary Schedule and based upon appropriate education and experience.

    + Employment is at-will, with no actual, expressed, or implied contract.

    + January 12, 2026

    Working Conditions / Physical Demands

    + Work is performed in a typical school office environment and involves mostly sedentary to light physical activity, typically requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and requiring walking or standing to a significant degree.

    + Duties may require climbing stairs, bending, reaching, handling objects, and using fingers to operate a computer and/or keyboard.

    + Work requires the expression or exchange of ideas and the ability to receive detailed information.

    + Work requires the ability to compare, compile, analyze, and coordinate data/information; instruct or train others; and utilize effective interpersonal skills and behaviors.

    This School Counselor position is assigned to work with students, staff and others who are Blind / Visually Impaired and requires proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Basic Emergency Communication Course skill level or above, as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy/procedures. Please check one (1) box below to describe / indicate your current level of ASL proficiency.

     

    + NO FUNCTIONAL SKILLS - (May be) Able to provide short single sign and "primarily" fingerspelled responses to some basic questions signed at a slow rate with extensive repetition and rephrasing.

    + NOVICE - Able to provide single sign and some short phrase/sentence responses to basic questions signed at a slow-to-moderate rate with frequent repetition and rephrasing.

    + SURVIVAL - Able to discuss basic social and work topics with responses generally 1-3 sentences in length.
