    Summary:

    Reports to the Unit Manager but daily activities are coordinated by the Unit Staff Nurse. Works with patient and family-focused care teams to ensure all business functions related to processing patient information. Manages documentation, transcribes orders and organizes patient medical record and chart. Obtains patient test results and other information for records. Facilitates communication among staff, relaying messages/information and running errands. Acts as receptionist for visitors to unit. Orients patients and families to the unit, answering routine questions. This description covers the essential functions of the position. Incumbent is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned.

    Job** **Responsibilities:

    1) Functions as a receptionist for the unit and facilitates the collection/dissemination of information.

     

    2) Initiates, maintains and completes hospital records and logs. Maintains chart in proper sequence and labels pages with patient’s ID sticker. Prepares medical record prior to patient transfer/discharge, faxes and/or copies medical records as needed.

     

    3) Maintains accurate and timely communications within unit. Answers patient call bell and relays messages promptly and consistently to team members.

     

    4) Sorts, distributes and files department incoming mail and incoming computer-generated information.

     

    5) Inventories, maintains and charges supplies/procedures. Initiates requisitions as requested accurately and in a timely fashion.

     

    6) Verbalizes knowledge and location of emergency equipment as observed by manager. Mobilizes Code team/C-section team when needed through immediate telephone/paging contact as evidenced by observation and feedback.

     

    7) Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with members of the health care team.

     

    8) Performs other unit activities that support patient care and unit functioning.

     

    9) Attends unit clerk meetings and unit staff meetings monthly. Precepts new unit clerk staff during orientation periods.

     

    **Minimally Required Experience** :

    **1)** None

    **Preferred Work Experience** :

    **1)** Previous experience as a medical secretary, unit clerk, or other applicable experience in a healthcare environment.

    **Skills and Competencies** :

     

    Knowledge of medical terminology

     

    Secretarial skills and computer knowledge required.

     

    Completes mandatory unit, Patient Care Division and hospital wide in-services and requirements.

     

    Consistently positive performance appraisals in key areas of function and interpersonal skills.

     

    Demonstrated ability to handle difficult and stressful situations.

    Education:

    GED or HiSET (Required)
