    Summary Statement

    The Boise Police Department is seeking a Community Service Digital Forensics Officer assigned to mobile digital forensics support. This position is primarily responsible for the intake, preservation, and extraction of digital evidence from mobile devices and related media in support of criminal investigations. The Community Service Digital Forensics Officer will maintain strict evidence control, documentation, and chain of custody; operate department-approved mobile device extraction tools; and prepare clear, accurate reports and case documentation for detectives, prosecutors, and the courts. Work routinely involves exposure to sensitive, disturbing, or graphic digital evidence, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), violence, nudity, and vulgar language.

    What you'll do:

    + Uses department-approved tools to extract digital evidence from mobile devices.

    + Organizes, secures, and documents digital evidence while carefully maintaining chain of custody.

    + Creates clear, accurate reports explaining extraction methods and results.

    + Receives ongoing training in mobile digital forensics, evidence handling, and department procedures.

    + Works collaboratively with detectives, supervisors, and prosecutors to support investigations.

    + Upholds strict confidentiality, professionalism, and CJIS/security standards.

    + Regularly reviews sensitive digital content, which may include graphic, sexual, or drug-related material, as part of investigative work.

    + May be called to testify in court as part of criminal proceedings to explain digital evidence handling, forensic methods, and results.

    Essential Functions

    + Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff. Is capable of performing all duties of a Community Service Officer I and II, and provides leadership, coaching, field training, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group, as needed.

    + Performs advanced crime scene investigations involving complex evidence collection, documentation, and processing using specialized forensic and photographic techniques; ensures proper handling and chain of custody of all evidence.

    + Conducts follow-up casework and investigations for assigned incidents, including interviewing victims and witnesses, obtaining and serving subpoenas, preparing detailed reports, and assisting detectives with major investigations.

    + Hold or develop a designated specialty assignment such as UAV operations, crash reconstruction, arson detection, firearms trajectory analysis, Fusion Liaison Officer, or digital evidence extraction, providing technical expertise in support of departmental operations.

    + Manages and maintains specialized investigative programs such as the Sexual Assault Kit (SAK) accountability process, evidence tracking systems, or other unit-level initiatives in coordination with external agencies and the Idaho State Police.

    + Develops and delivers training for patrol, detectives, POST Academy, and other community groups. Attends ongoing professional development to maintain advanced skills in forensic evidence collection and investigative practices.

    + Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.

    Requirements

    Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

    + High school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience working in law enforcement or working with the public, in-security or a related field.

    Knowledge of:

    + Boise City and Idaho State criminal codes

    + Law enforcement programs, practices and procedures

    + Computer usage including related software

    + Basic report preparation skills

    + Specialty operations like UAV operator, crash reconstruction, firearms trajectory, or arson detection

    + DSLR camera usage.

    Ability to:

    + Interpret and apply laws and ordinances

    + Determine priorities, manage multiple projects under stress, and show the ability to multi-task

    + Use good customer service and de-escalation techniques

    + Use independent judgment and discretion

    + Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance

    + Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

    + Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

    Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

    + Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field and five years of experience in a law enforcement environment.

    + OC (Pepper Spray) certification.

    Licensing And Other Requirements

    •Valid state-issued driver's license.

    •National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within six months of employment.

    Special Requirements

    Applicants must be able to pass:

    + City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

    + Boise Police Department Criminal Justice Information System Background Check (BPD CJIS)

Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

    Physical Efforts

    While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.     Working Environment

    + The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards and work in/at heights. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Work includes processing of crime scenes that may be hazardous or unsanitary, located in houses, buildings, outdoors in adverse weather conditions, etc. Individuals will be subject to evidence of violence or trauma including graphic and disturbing scenes of homicide, sexual assault, robbery, traffic accidents, abuse, arson, autopsy subjects (deceased persons, children, and animals), and related evidence at all stages during the investigation and prosecution of crimes. Protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids, and chemicals. Wears uniforms, ballistic vests, and body cameras; drives semi-marked police vehicles equipped with amber light bars and emergency flashers to scenes in all types of weather conditions and all hours of the day and night.
