Description
The Cemetery Supervisor plans, supervises, assigns, and evaluates work activities in operation and maintenance of the Municipal Cemetery system. This includes overseeing and directing employees in transactions, record keeping, grave and monument layouts, interments, disinterment, building maintenance, project management, and landscape maintenance. The Supervisor works under the general direction of the Parks Superintendent to assist with preparing the department budget, monitoring the current year’s budget, and supervising a staff of full-time and seasonal employees. The position is accountable for performance and initiates disciplinary action when City and departmental policies are violated.
Examples of Duties
+ Recommends supplies and equipment purchases for department budget recommendations.
+ Assists Superintendent in preparing department budget, as well as, the requisition and procurement of supplies and equipment to maintain buildings and offices.
+ Plans employee work schedules and directs work activities involving Cemetery operations, including but not limited to, special projects, cemetery expansions, maintenance of existing facilities, landscapes, trees, grounds, roads, grave sites, irrigation systems, vehicles and equipment. Responsible for irrigation scheduling.
+ Responsible for hiring, training, promoting, disciplining, terminating and conducting annual evaluations of employees.
+ Maintains all records for the Cemetery in accordance with federal, state and local laws and ordinances.
+ Enforces all ordinances, laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the Cemetery.
+ Responsible for layout of all foundations, vaults, tombs, urns, mausoleums, monuments etc. to proper sizes, depths and footings.
+ Responsible for accepting monies from the public for plots, burials, interments, opening and closing graves, digging of burial plots, setting of government headstones and flagging sites for monument company to set monuments.
+ Has access to and processes information which may be confidential and restricted to specific individuals.
+ Administers a strong and progressive safety program to ensure a safe environment for employees.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Cemetery administration and operations. Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques required in Cemetery management. Skill in the use of hand tools and standard maintenance equipment. Ability to inspect, evaluate and recommend Cemetery improvement verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with other City employees, public officials and the general public. Ability to maintain operational residential telephone services and respond to off-duty work calls. Ability to use GIS and Building Maint. Systems.
Education, Certification, and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of two years of related experience in grave digging, equipment operation, grounds and facilities maintenance/construction preferred. Valid driver’s license required. Must obtain Kansas Driver's License withing 90 days of establishing residency. A Kansas Class B CDL driver’s license is preferred.

Environment:
Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.
Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to, dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass and wood.
Equipment/Tools Used:
Equipment: Includes, but not limited to, pickups, dump trucks, backhoes, tractors, skid loaders, boring augers, riding and push mowers, weed eaters and edger's.
Tools: Includes, but not limited to; chain saws, hedge trimmers, loppers, hand pruners, hand saws, shovels, rakes, wheel barrows, table saw, chop saw, drills, levels, sanders, bench and angle grinders, pump sprayers, paint brushes, air tools and all hand tools.
Physical Characteristics:
Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 26-50 pounds and carrying up to 25 pounds.
