The Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) is seeking a Supervisory Health Technician (Optician) for the Optical Shop located at the VAMC at Iron Mountain, MI
As a Supervisory Health Technician (Optician), the candidate will oversee and provide direct supervision of the Health Technicians (Optician), work directly with patients after they have seen an optometrist or ophthalmologist, and is responsible for overseeing the ordering of the proper products needed, and then ensuring that they are fitted, adjusted, and repaired properly. The candidate works under the general supervision of the canteen chief or his/her designee. Acts as a liaison between VCS, the optical shop, the optical contractor, the eye clinic, and prosthetics.
DUTIES:
+ Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
+ Greets customers entering the Optical Shop; answers customer questions and advises customers on price, availability, and estimates the time frame of arrival of glasses.
+ Responsible for all personnel functions related to the management of the Optician staff.
+ Provide direct supervision to the Optician staff, overseeing daily operations
+ Assigning functions to the team members, ensuring the work assignments are carried out; distributing and balancing workload and tasks among employees with established workflow and/or job specialization.
+ Takes an active role in assisting customers in the selection of frames and/or upgrades and has thorough knowledge of all Frames, Lenses and coatings available.
+ Performs fittings, measures eyewear, and documents all notes within the CPRS system. Performs basic eyeglass repairs and adjustments.
+ Handles necessary communications and follow-up.
+ Must have a thorough knowledge of safety protocols for disease prevention, specifically COVID, and proper PPE usage.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
+ Must have 1-year specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.
+ Must have advanced computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn new computer programs for the optical contractor and VA, including DOS based programs.
+ Must be able to identify anomalies in a prescription and implement the appropriate course of action. Ability to measure and verify that the lenses are correctly positioned in the spectacle frame/mount within tolerances.
+ Possess the skills to match the form, type and positioning of lenses to meet all the patient’s needs.
+ Identify problems, including but not limited to verifying RX, verifying transitions, optical centers, seg heights, improper frame selections, etc.
+ A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
