UPMC Hamot is adding a casual Nursing Assistant to the TNICU!
_Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience._
Direct Patient Care
+ Provides direct patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), including activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and transporting patients.
+ Performs UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities, including vital signs, blood glucose testing, weights, intake and output (I&O), telemetry monitor application/reapplication, specimen collection, Foley care, and hospital-acquired condition (HAC) and patient safety indicator prevention.
+ Provides companionship and one-on-one supervision for patients as required.
+ Responds appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
+ May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy.
+ Provides diversional activities to reduce or prevent the use of restraints.
Environment of Care & Safety
+ Maintains a safe, clean, and organized environment to support patient safety and recovery, including completing safety checks, changing bed linens, emptying linen hampers, cleaning unit-specific equipment, keeping hallways clear, and returning equipment to designated areas.
+ Complies with all safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen exposure protocols.
+ Reports equipment malfunctions promptly to the appropriate department.
Unit & Operational Support
+ Acquires, distributes, and stocks supplies and equipment to support patient care delivery, including setting up patient care equipment within the nursing assistant scope of practice.
+ Performs messenger functions, orders supplies, charges/credits supplies, and stocks patient rooms and unit supply areas.
+ Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.
+ Participates in universal unit activities such as responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients ('ticket to ride').
Communication & Teamwork
+ Communicates clearly, professionally, and effectively with RNs and all members of the healthcare team.
+ Provides timely feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient condition.
+ Establishes and maintains respectful, collaborative working relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
+ Demonstrates awareness of cultural diversity, workplace safety, impairment in the health professions, and horizontal violence.
Documentation & Compliance
+ Documents patient care accurately and timely in the medical record according to established procedures.
+ Completes clerical functions as required by the department.
+ Strictly adheres to all hospital policies and procedures related to patient care, safety, and confidential information.
+ Access to medications is limited to delivering medications to the nurse.
Professional Development & Accountability
+ Constructively receives feedback and direction and participates in self-review as requested.
+ Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director or direct leader.
+ Takes initiative to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.
+ Requests assistance with planning and prioritizing work as needed.
+ Assumes responsibility for assigned duties, views challenges as opportunities, and understands the impact of individual behavior on unit efficiency.
+ Suggests and supports departmental improvements and initiatives.
+ High school diploma or GED required.
+ Successful completion of the UPMC Nursing Assistant training program required.
+ Knowledge of proper body mechanics and safe patient transfer techniques.
+ Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.
+ Act 34 clearance required.
