    About the Position

    Through an apprentice training program comprising of five (5) years of course study and 8000 hours of on-the-job training, the successful candidate will become a journeyman mechanic. An apprentice will learn a variety of mechanical skills involving preventative maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy industrial equipment associated with the pumping plants, generating station, checks, turnouts, and other Central Arizona Project features. Performance of this maintenance ensures that all plant equipment is safe, mechanically sound and operating efficiently, in order to provide reliable water deliveries.

    Some of the duties include:

    1.Learn to maintain, install, overhaul, improve, troubleshoot, test, calibrate, and repair heavy industrial equipment.

    2.Learn to install, modify and repair various piping types and systems.

    3.Learn to be highly proficient in the use and selection of tools and equipment such as precision measuring devices, calibrating equipment, precision leveling devices and alignment equipment.

    4.Learn to perform all types of welding, burning, soldering, brazing, and become knowledgeable of AWS and ASME codes and requirements.

    5.Learn to interpret and work from manuals, procedures, schematic drawings, diagrams, and technical shop blueprints.

    6.Learn the proper safety procedures to operate overhead cranes and hoists, using proper crane signaling, and perform the necessary rigging required.

    7.Learn to implement safe clearance procedures.

    8.Learn proper documentation procedures of maintenance activities.

     

    Works under close supervision of a journeyman but will learn to make independent decisions to complete work assignments in a timely and safe manner.

     

    Specific Millwright Mechanic Assignments

    Pumping Plants

    + Responsible for the operational availability, efficient operation and maintenance of large pumping plants, generation stations, check structures and turnouts. Performs overhauls, installations, modifications, troubleshooting and predictive and preventative maintenance of plant equipment and systems, as well as local plant operations. These positions are subject to call outs to a variety of operational emergencies on off hours. Work assignments are primarily at pumping plants and other system facilities in a specific geographic area, but at times throughout their employment may be assigned to work at other locations across the Central Arizona Project system, as needs dictate. These locations and facilities are located geographically located throughout Arizona.

    Heavy Overhaul

    + Responsible for the heavy overhaul including assembly and disassembly, precision alignment and commissioning of major equipment, troubleshooting and repair of industrial mechanical equipment. Performs overhauls, installations and modifications of plant equipment and systems including synchronous motors, large pumps, hydroelectric turbines, radial gates and hoists, slide gates and hydraulic operator systems. While these positions report to a centralized location, most work assignments are located across the entire Central Arizona Project system as needs dictate. Extensive overnight travel is required throughout the work week.

    Machinist

    + Responsible for precision machine operation including CNC, manual, and field machining in support of the overhaul and repair of heavy industrial mechanical equipment associated with large pumping plants, generation stations, check structures, turnouts and aqueducts. Equipment includes synchronous motors, large pumps, hydroelectric turbines, radial gates and hoists, slide gates and hydraulic operator systems. Work assignments are primarily at Headquarters Machine Shop, but at times throughout their employment may be assigned to work at other locations across the Central Arizona Project system, as needs dictate. Occasional overnight travel will be required throughout the work week.

    About the Qualifications

    + High School diploma or high school equivalency (G.E.D.)

    + Minimum of one year (two semesters) of high school algebra or one semester of college level algebra (MAT 092 – Introductory Algebra) with a minimum grade of "C."

     

    Please note: Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record. This is a safety-sensitive position and requires physical testing.
