    Job Description

    Insight Global's client is seeking a hands-on technician to support testing and commissioning of high-voltage substation systems, including protection, control, and power equipment for their end-clients in the energy space. Ideal candidates have a minimum of 3 years of experience in electrical testing, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to interpret technical drawings and relay settings.

    Day to Day Responsibilities:

    Support testing and commissioning of medium and high voltage substation protection and control (P&C) systems, including both new (greenfield) and existing (brownfield) projects.

     

    Perform hands-on testing of substation equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, capacitor banks, and battery systems.

     

    Conduct testing of AC/DC station service systems, including panel boards, transfer switches, and battery chargers.

     

    Interpret and troubleshoot electrical schematics and test results to ensure systems meet design intent.

     

    Assist in developing and executing detailed testing and commissioning plans, including circuit isolation, sequencing, and energization planning.

     

    Participate in daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, and promote Human Performance Improvement (HPI) practices.

     

    Support energization and in-service checks to validate system performance.

     

    Collaborate with project leads, engineers, and contractors to coordinate testing activities and resolve issues.

     

    Maintain accurate documentation including test logs, progress reports, discrepancy records, and RFIs.

     

    Provide professional communication and customer service to clients and internal teams.

     

    Complete administrative tasks such as timecards, expense reports, and project documentation.

    Skills and Requirements

     

    Work Experience: Minimum 3+ years of experience in substation electrical testing and commissioning (15 kV to 500 kV systems).

     

    Familiarity with electrical safety standards (NETA, IEEE, NFPA) and HPI tools.

     

    Proficient in testing microprocessor-based protective relays (e.g., SEL, GE, Basler) and using related software (e.g., AcSELerator, GE Enervista).

     

    Experience with IEC 61850 protocols and relay test sets (e.g., Omicron CMC, Doble F6150).

     

    Strong understanding of three-phase power systems, protection schemes, and substation design.

     

    Skilled in using test equipment (e.g., Omicron, Doble, Megger, Fluke) for functional and diagnostic testing.

     

    Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills.

     

    Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

     

    Educational Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Technology, or equivalent experience.

     

    Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam; eligibility for PE license preferred.

     

    Electrical safety training (e.g., OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E).
