    Examples of work at** **Transportation Generalist Senior level** **for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:

    + Assists the Chief Inspector on a significant portion of complex projects

    + Serves as the Chief Inspector on less complex construction projects

    + Performs and/or directs frequent/routine field testing of construction materials

    + Performs construction inspections and verifies the dimensions and tolerances of constructed roadway features

    + Performs routine documentation to record location, quantity and quality of contract work and also completes required reports and administrative documentation (such as pay items, force account summaries, test reports, usage reports, etc.) within MnDOT requirements from letting to finalization to ensure records of work and materials used are accurate and timely as well as enters pay items into AASHTOWARE.

    + Applies enforcement procedures to the contract for less complex construction projects or recommends the application of enforcement procedures to the Chief Inspector

    + Monitors contractor and traffic control safety practices

    + Provides work direction to assistant inspectors

    + Interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.

    + Assists with final reviews on construction projects to ensure contractors have the appropriate certification.

    + Perform design activities.

    Examples of work for this specific vacancy at the** **Transportation Generalist Level** **include but are not limited to:

    + Obtains representative samples of bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and performs appropriate tests to ensure quality assurance.

    + Performs the construction materials acceptance tests (such as gradations, density, air, beam, cylinder and slump) in the field as required to ensure quality of materials.

    + Reads and interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.

    + Checks the dimensions and tolerances of constructed roadway features to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.

    + Measures, computes and documents pay items to ensure proper payment for work done under the contract.

    + Performs and implements inspection processes so that test failures are corrected.

    + Monitors the work of contractor personnel to ensure compliance with established processes, practices, and specifications.

    + Assists the Plant Monitor to ensure materials meet specifications and requirements

     

    NOTE: If you are awarded this position and are a current MnDOT District 8 employee with snow & ice duties, you will continue snow & ice duties from your current location until our backfilling process is completed or until the end of the snow & ice season – whichever comes first.

    Minimum Qualifications at the Transportation Generalist Senior level:

    **Exam Part 1:** The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist Senior level can be achieved with:

    + **Experience:** Two years of experience performing contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction) activities or related activities.

    OR

    + A combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas may substitute for one year of performing contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction) activities: bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits planning, pre-design, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, and signs, surveys, snow/ice, and/or traffic engineering.

     

    Note: A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

    Certified in:

    + **Aggregate Production**

     

    Must have at least two (2) of the following Tech Certifications and obtain the other within 12-24 months of hire.

     

    + Concrete Field Tester

    + Grading and Base Tester

    + Bituminous Street

    A valid MN Class “D” Driver’s license

    + Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

    **Exam Part 2:** **Applicants** that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 5 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 5 or higher. (Acceptance of the offer is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.) If you’ve previously taken and passed the math and reading assessments, you may be exempt from retesting. Please check with your district HR office.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Concrete Field Inspector, Grading and Base Inspector, Landscaping

    + Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist.

    Minimum Qualifications at the Transportation Generalist level:

    **Exam Part 1:** The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:

    + **Experience:** A combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas:contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, snow/ice, surveys, and/or traffic engineering. Credit will also be awarded for professional residential or commercial building construction.

    OR

    + **Education:** A two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees:Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

    Physical Duties

    Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 75-pound bags of sample materials maximum and frequent lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

     

    General Office

     

    While performing the duties if this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use wrists, hands, and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

     

    Technical/Field

     

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both cold and hot) on an occasional basis. The employee will occasionally drive a motor vehicle in off-road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven/sloping ground. They will usually work inside in an office environment. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, and squatting). The employee will operate machinery and testing equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may occasionally move up to 100 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
