Job Summary
The Custodian I Day Porter is an in-person position that provides custodial services for events and classes. This person works closely with the Facilities Operations Call Center to provide cleaning, supply refills, and other custodial services.
Custodial duties are performed by using our team cleaning system, including the use of a 13-20 pound backpack vacuum. The basic custodial duties include cleaning restrooms, picking up debris on floors, cleaning all areas before, during, and after events.
Custodial staff are considered critical employees which means, in the event of a University of Michigan-Dearborn emergency reduction in operations, including a public health emergency, suspension of academic classes, or during weather-related reductions in operations, the Manager of Building Services has designated this position as critical.
Responsibilities*
+ Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings.
+ Clean mirrors, inside of exterior glass and both sides of interior glass while standing on the floor or step ladder.
+ Clean inside and outside of all vestibule/entrance while standing on the floor or step ladder.
+ Completely clean and stock with supplies all restrooms.
+ Dust venetian blinds and all other surfaces while standing on the floor or step ladder.
+ Spot wash walls, doors, frames and light switches to remove such items as splash marks, touch points, smudges, blackmarks etc.
+ Clean patient bedside equipment. Make beds and change linen.
+ Change or replace shower or cubical curtains while standing on floor or step ladder.
+ Collect and transport general and recycled waste materials to central location.
+ Report items in need of repair or full.
+ Sweep, dustmop, spot mop floors and stairways.
+ Wet mop small areas of floor or stairs to clean up such items as spilled liquid or food.
+ Disinfect all areas as directed.
+ Clean, disinfect, and dispose of all blood and body fluids as directed and to policy.
+ Maintain an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructions.
+ Replace burnt out incandescent light bulbs while standing on floor or step ladder.
+ Move and arrange furniture and furnishings to facilitate cleaning and event set-ups as well as returning them to their original position.
+ Collect and transport soiled linen to a central location.
+ Clean assigned area of work and equipment.
+ Wet mop floors and stairways, including carpeted areas.
+ Hand mop small areas inaccessible to mechanical floor cleaning equipment upon request.
+ Operate and maintain basic custodial equipment (vacuums, carts, mops, buckets, wringers etc.).
+ Use all safety precautions to protect self and others
RELATED DUTIES
+ Maintain all custodial equipment and closets.
+ Move and arrange furniture and furnishings.
+ Rearrange / reset classrooms as required.
+ Safely apply cleaning chemicals.
+ Snow removal.
+ Fill supply orders and restock closets.
Required Qualifications*
+ Graduation from high school or GED is necessary
+ Minimum of two (2) years custodial working experience.
+ Ability to lift to 50 pounds.
+ Ability to lift, bend, and be on your feet for several hours at a time.
+ Must be able to communicate clearly in spoken and written English.
Work Schedule
This position is 40 hours per week / Days / Monday - Friday / In-person, schedule may be adjusted accordingly, as needed.

Additional Information
The pay will follow the AFSCME contract pay grade: probation period $19.09 and $20.15 after a successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
