    Salary $34.91 - $40.06 per hour upon meeting the requirements. Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities invites applications for the position of Pipefitter. The department is responsible for all aspects of maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and installation of steam and condensate systems as well as chilled water and hot water heating systems, and we want your help.

     

    This position will lay out, fabricate, install, repair, and maintain piping fixtures used in the production and distribution of steam or hot water under low or high pressures; perform preventive maintenance and services, repairs, replace, and install a wide variety of mechanical equipment and/or systems; fabricate, assemble, install, repair, and test a variety of piping systems, including high and low pressure steam, condensate, hydronic heating, and chilled water systems; operate pipe cutters, pipe threaders, power saws, drill presses, impact drills, and other tools of the trade; perform welding and cutting in support of primary assignments; interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications; complete necessary paperwork to requisition materials and parts. This position will also prepare detailed reports, recommendations, records, and similar information for supervisory and management use; requisition materials and parts; estimate time and materials to be used on the job; stock, maintain, and operate a University service vehicle. This position will work a swing shift trouble truck and respond to a wide variety of service calls and carry an on-call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis.

    Job responsibilities are as follows:

    50%: Fabricate, install, repair, and maintain piping fixtures used in steam and heating hot water system for facilities.

     

    35%: Fabricate, install, repair, and maintain piping fixtures used in chilled water systems for facilities.

     

    15%: Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development. Training in various aspects of the job. (Steam, Hot water, Chilled Water, Safety)

     

    This position will engage in high performing, leading edge practices, valuing people, partners and stewardship.

    Minimum Requirements

    + Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.

    + Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.

    + Five years of experience in the trade that includes five years of experience in commercial pipefitting installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.

    + Must have possession of Journeyman’s Card or successful completion of a trade competency assessment to receive progression step increases at and after the 18-month mark.

    + Expert knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.

    + Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal).

    + Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

    + Must furnish own hand tools.

    + Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

    Desired Qualifications

    Knowledge of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX Welding and Brazing qualification; possession State of Michigan Mechanical License for Boiler Installers/Repairers; State of Michigan Plumbing Journeyman License; experience with steam/condensate, hot water heat, and processed piping systems; ability to troubleshoot; experience in customer contact.
