What we’re looking for:
General Purpose of Job
The Process Safety Engineer applies established process safety principles to identify, assess, and control risks, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards. This role provides technical support and independent execution of key PSM elements, contributes to hazard studies and risk assessments, and partners with operations, maintenance, EHS and engineering teams to improve process safety performance and drive sustainable compliance.
Essential Job Functions, Authorities and Responsibilities
+ Provide day-to-day support in the Management of Change and Pre-Startup Safety Review Programs. Including but not limited to MOC applicability, evaluation, hazard reviews, auditing and MOC Training.
+ Review Management of Change proposals and evaluate if a PHA is necessary for the change.
+ Participate in Pre-Startup Safety Reviews for MOCs and Unit Restarts.
+ Lead and/or participate in process safety related incident investigations. Provide support and guidance for the process safety classification of incidents, following API 754 for Process Safety Performance.
+ Monitor and report out on assigned PSM Key Performance Indicators, making recommendations for improvements as needed.
+ Lead and facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (clean sheets, revalidations, MOCs and Capital Projects) for assigned units of responsibility, and support other units as requested. PHA studies include Layers of Protection Analyses (LOPA) to further assess hazard prevention and mitigation ensuring Independent Layers of Protections (IPLs) are appropriately evaluated.
+ Oversee assigned elements of process safety including but not limited to Management of Change, Pre-startup Safety Reviews, Mechanical Integrity, Incident Reporting and Investigation, Operating Procedures, and Training.
+ Provide training to site personnel on assigned process safety programs, procedures, and digital platforms.
+ Support the progression of PHA/LOPA recommendations for units of responsibility, ensuring appropriate planning and execution.
+ Champion updates and deployment of improved process safety standards and procedures in alignment with regulatory and corporate requirements.
+ Ensure regulatory compliance with Federal Regulation 29 CFR 1910.119 (OSHA PSM) and 40 CFR 68 (EPA RMP).
+ Assist in regulatory agency inspections, third-party audits, and company-led audits, providing recommendations and ensuring sustained compliance.
+ Lead and participate in cross-functional process safety initiatives across the business segment.
+ Compile and share industry best practices, experiences and lessons learned from incidents. Ensure that the activities are carried out to comply with the integrated management system, as applicable (safety, food safety, GMP, health, environmental, quality and responsible care requirements).
+ Essential functions require presence in the workplace on a regular basis and an ability to work extra hours if needed. If applicable, ability to work overtime may be needed to ensure required staffing capacity to meet daily production objectives.
+ Work collaboratively with team members with different backgrounds and perspectives.
+ Assists other employees in accomplishments of Indorama company goals. Follows instructions and performs other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
+ Participates in Environmental, Health, & Safety initiatives as set forth by the company. Participates in and completes company required training programs.
Education / Experience / Skills Requirements
List any specific education and experience requirements:
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field from an accredited university required
+ 3 years’ experience in Process Safety Management or plant operations and engineering experience within chemical, petrochemical or refining industries required
+ Experience in plant operations or engineering is a plus.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and specialized PHA software such as PHA-Pro or Sphera is preferred.
+ Ability to leverage digital tools, analytics, and advanced software platforms to enhance risk assessment and decision-making.
List any specific certifications, licenses, or registrations:
+ Certification as a CCPSC (Certified Process Safety Professional) is beneficial.
+ Certification as a Process Hazards Analysis Facilitator is preferred.
Specific Skills and Knowledge
+ Knowledgeable in regulatory compliance requirements, including OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119), EPA RMP (40 CFR 68), and other applicable U.S. and internal standards. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations to complex operations.
+ Familiar with industry standards and best practices (API, NFPA, ASME, CCPS), with the ability to benchmark against global peers and implement continuous improvements.
+ Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to apply and interpret complex standards and procedures, evaluate risk-reduction alternatives and recommend cost-effective safeguards.
+ Proven ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams, manage competing priorities, and deliver results under tight deadlines.
+ Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels, from frontline operators and mechanics to executive leadership.
+ Must have a level of proficiency with SAP, Internet, Email and Microsoft Office programs.
+ Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including abilities to train on process safety topics, management systems and programs.
