Akron General's 52A Surgical Unit is a post-surgical unit that specializes in general surgeries, such as bariatric gastric sleeves, Roux-en-Y, cholecystectomy, thyroidectomy, urostomy, and more. 52A is the primary trauma floor for patients not requiring intensive care, and these are high acuity patients coming from the PACU and ED who require close monitoring and mobilization. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) on the team, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and feel comfortable, supported and safe throughout treatment. This is a hands-on role that requires a present, attentive, and empathetic caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and support patients through some of their most vulnerable moments. In this role, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments within the Cleveland Clinic system.
A caregiver in this position works nights from 7:00PM - 7:30AM, including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies.
+ Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
+ Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height.
+ Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck's traction.
+ Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
+ Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.
+ Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.
+ Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area.
+ Assist in keeping patient rooms in order, report equipment that is out of order, clean equipment and inventory and distribute unit linen and supplies.
+ Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
+ Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ High School Diploma or GED
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within new hire period
+ Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills
+ Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)
+ One year of recent acute care experience
Physical Requirements:
+ Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
+ Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
+ Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
Personal Protective Equipment:
+ Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
