    The mission of the District Attorney’s Office is to create a safer community through positive partnerships with law enforcement and other community members, earn and hold the trust and respect of the citizens that we are privileged and honored to serve, pursue justice through the fair and ethical prosecutions of criminal offenders, and seek justice for victims of crime.

     

    The District Attorney’s Office seeks an experienced Auto Theft Prosecutor to advance the mission of the DA’s Office by focusing on the prosecution of criminal cases related to auto theft. This position is grant-funded through a partnership with the Colorado District Attorney’s Council and will focus exclusively on the investigation and prosecution of cases involving motor vehicle theft, organized criminal acts related to auto theft, and other associated violent crimes across several judicial districts.

     

    The grant funding for this position is extended through June 2026, with the opportunity for further annual extension through June 2028.

     

    Examples of Duties for Success

     

    + Demonstrate a strong commitment to seeking justice, preserving community safety and making the criminal justice system better.

    + Maintain a large volume of felony cases and perform all necessary duties of a District Court prosecutor to initiate and pursue successful prosecution of criminal cases related to auto theft, including making appropriate plea offers, preparing witnesses, collaborating with law enforcement and interacting with defense attorneys.

    + Receive and review felony case filing materials, including examining evidence, witness statements, nature of the crime, and whether the evidence justifies continued prosecution.

    + Conduct legal research, prepares reports and develops recommendations related to the District Attorney’s policies, procedures, and operations.

    + Represent the prosecution in felony-level criminal calendar proceedings including the scheduling of cases, plea negotiations, probation revocation hearings, motions and sentencings.

    + Serve as prosecuting attorney for jury and court trials.

    + Represent the 17thJudicial District and District Attorney using professionalism and integrity in dealing with court officials, witnesses, members of the legal community and the general public.

    + Serve as a leader and mentor in the office, particularly with less-experienced attorneys.

    + Establish, nurture and improve relationships between the District Attorney’s Office and the community.

    + Demonstrate leadership to improve and strengthen the units and teams within the District Attorney’s Office.

    + Serve as a liaison to law enforcement agencies within the 17thJudicial District, as well as surrounding Judicial Districts.

    + Provide, on a scheduled basis, off-hour and on-call services to police agencies requiring assistance during nights and weekends.

    + Coordinate investigative activities with outside agencies, assists in regional investigations.

    + Research, analyze, and identify trends and develops strategies with respect to the investigation and prosecution of auto theft; maintains statistical records related to the investigation and prosecution of auto theft.

    + Assist law enforcement agency personnel to facilitate or perform necessary case follow up and discuss strategy in areas relative to criminal investigation and prosecution.

    + May travel throughout the region of the various judicial districts described above to investigate and prosecute cases involving auto theft.

    + Work closely with various law enforcement agencies, tasks forces, and other investigative units to gather evidence, build cases, and support ongoing investigations.

     

    This prosecutor will work for the District Attorney in the 17thJudicial District, but will also work with the Offices of the District Attorney for the 13thJudicial District (Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedwick, Washington, Yuma, and Kit Carson Counties), the 19thJudicial District (Weld County), and the 8thJudicial District (Larimer and Jackson Counties), and the 14thJudicial District (Grand, Moffat, and Route Counties) .

     

    A portion of the grant funding requires training to law enforcement and prosecutors on legal standards, practices, and strategies related to the investigation and prosecution of auto theft, as well as stay updated on current laws and court rulings that may impact auto theft prosecution.

    To be successful, our candidate should have the following knowledge, skill, and abilities:

    + A commitment to working with integrity, keeping our community safe, and making our criminal justice system better.

    + Considerable knowledge of civil and criminal law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, statutes, and ordinances applicable to the 17thJudicial District of Colorado.

    + Experience working auto theft investigations.

    + Experience handling cases filed under the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA) strongly preferred.

    + Knowledge of the duties, powers, limitations and authorities of the District Attorney’s Office and related law enforcement or criminal justice agencies.

    + Experience prosecuting felony cases from their inception to jury trial, sentencing and post-conviction litigation.

    + Skill in courtroom presentation.

    + Knowledge of established precedents, case law and sources of legal reference applicable to the activities of assigned specialized area and the District Attorney’s Office.

    + Knowledge of criminal law and procedure, rules of evidence, and advanced principles of litigation, trial and hearing procedures.

    + Knowledge of ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional standards and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations.

    + Commitment to working collaboratively in a team environment.

    + Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

    + Ability to work independently and efficiently to meet statutory deadlines.

    + Ability to learn and utilize computer case management software programs.

    + Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, court officials, law enforcement and the community.

     

    Qualifications for Success

     

    + Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school.

    + Four (4) years minimum experience as prosecuting attorney in the State of Colorado or another State is required.

    + Prior felony prosecution experience is required.

    + Must be a licensed attorney permitted to practice law in the State of Colorado.

    + Excellent writing and oral communication skills.

    NOTE: This is a project-designated, grant funded position with an end date of 06/30/2026 that includes a provisional extension through 06/30/2028, available to be renewed on an annual basis, contingent upon available funding from Legislative appropriation each year with no guarantee of approval year to year. This position is expected to work 40 hours/week. Positions funded by external grants are subject to the availability of grant funds and may be subject to termination at the end of this grant period. Positions funded by external grants will be reviewed by the District Attorney's Office for viability in the absence of grant funds. This position does not qualify for retirement benefits.
