    Join UPMC Hamot's dynamic 17-suite Operating Room as a Lead Surgical Technologist and play a vital role on our Kidney Transplant team. This full-time, rotating position (8-, 10-, or 12-hour shifts with on-call) offers the opportunity to serve patients from infancy through geriatrics.     In this role, there is opportunity to -

    + Lead daily surgical technologist operations, serving as the primary resource for workflow, questions, and issue resolution.

    + Coordinate and support Kidney Transplant cases, ensuring readiness of specialized instruments, graft materials, and equipment.

    + Perform advanced surgical technologist duties across multiple specialties, maintaining strict aseptic technique and safety standards.

    + Facilitate sterile setup, instrumentation management, and accurate counts throughout surgical procedures.

    + Educate and precept new employees, students, and peers, supporting ongoing skill development and competency.

    + Collaborate with nursing leadership to support case scheduling, supply utilization, and operational efficiency.

    + Liaise with Sterile Processing to ensure timely availability and integrity of instruments and trays.

    + Update and maintain surgeon preference cards and requisitions as clinical needs evolve.

    + Ensure compliance with medication labeling, handling, and handoff policies.

    + Monitor equipment functionality and environmental safety, proactively addressing risks and hazards.

     

    PA legislature House Bill 81 enacted 10/29/2020 and became effective 12/28/2020.

     

    Must have completed program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintains certification or Has completed an appropriate military training program or Maintains certification from an accredited program or Was employed as a surg tech in a health care facility on or before effective date of the act (12/28/2020) or Employed as a surg tech at another health care facility two years before effective date (12/28/2020). Exception: A health care facility may employ individuals who do not meet the certification requirements if after a diligent and thorough effort has been made they are unable to employ a sufficient number of qualified surg techs who meet the requirements (i.e. certification) and a written record of efforts is made and retained at the health care facility. 1. All of our recruitment efforts are documented and can be supplied for this record. 2. The supply of certified or eligible to be certified surg techs does not meet our needs.

    Continuing education requirements:

    Compliance with continuing ed requirements specified by the credentialing organization for certification. For individuals, not certified - must complete 30 hours of continuing ed every two years.

    Required

    + Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.

    + A minimum of 4 years or more of Operating Room experience.

    + Advanced knowledge of at least 3 surgical specialties.

    + Receive a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on last performance evaluation.

    + Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) required.Act 31 Mandated Reporter Training within 90 days of hire or transfer

    + Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

    + Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) OR Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC)

    + Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

    + Act 33 with renewal

    + Act 34 with renewal

    + Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
