Primary Purpose

The Assistant Professor of English provides instruction to students in transfer-level composition courses and literature. They also direct student discussion and evaluate student performance in the classroom in accordance with Humanities Department guidelines and curricula. In addition, this position develops curriculum, assesses student learning, and provides student advising. Instruction is for students in exploratory coursework or an Associate of Science or Associate of Arts degree program. The Assistant Professor of English would also have the opportunity to teach literature classes 1 – 3 times per academic year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

+ Provide instruction in composition and literature courses primarily in person, using established course outcomes. This includes lecturing and guiding in-class writing activities, providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend and could include classes taught on any of the four campuses COCC serves, teaching co-requisite and composition courses on Zoom, and teaching developmental literacy courses in person. Instructor will have the opportunity to teach asynchronous online composition courses 1 – 3 times each academic year.

+ Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.

+ Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.

+ Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Student Accessibility Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.

+ Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review.

+ Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.

+ Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.

+ Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.

+ Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Department Specific

Central Oregon Community College ( COCC ) is an access-oriented institution located on four campuses in the Central Oregon region. The main campus is in Bend with branch campuses in Redmond, Prineville, and Madras. Instructors also have the opportunity to teach at Deer Ridge Correctional Institution. COCC is the oldest two-year college in Oregon and offers a wide range of degrees, certificates, and learning opportunities for students pursuing transfer degrees, career and technical education and training, GED preparation, and/ or lifelong/ community learning. COCC serves residents in 6 counties across a 10,000-square mile district.

English instructors in the Humanities Department primarily teach composition courses, with opportunities to teach literature, film, humanities, or creative writing 1 – 3 times each academic year. COCC is on the quarter system, with a typical Humanities Department teaching load of 4-3-3 for the academic year (fall, winter, and spring terms). Teaching is the primary assignment of all COCC instructors, with professional development, college service, and community service forming an integral part of our job as instructors at COCC . Expectations for professional development, college service, and community service are commensurate with instructors’ rank.

+ Thorough knowledge in the field of composition based on education and/or experience in the field, as well as demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.

+ Thorough knowledge in a field of literature based on education and/or experience in the field, as well as demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.

+ Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.

+ Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.

+ Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.

+ Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite: various course management systems; technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses; and other technology used in the instruction setting.

+ Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.

+ Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.

Ergonomic Requirements

Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, whiteboards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

+ Master’s Degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or other relevant field from an accredited institution; or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in academic courses in the field of the primary teaching assignment.

Experience:

+ One year of successful college teaching experience in composition or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.

+ One year of successful college teaching experience in Native American literature and/ or African literature or graduate credit in academic courses in those fields.
