    Job Classification: Provisional Custodian (numerous vacancies) – Nassau County resident requirement*

     

    Effective: Immediately; M-F 3:30-11:30, 12 months

     

    Salary: In accordance with existing salary schedule

    Duties:

    + Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips and waxes floors. Washes walls, glass and furniture - dusts, polishes, empties trash and recyclables, and performs cleaning duties.

    + Operates cleaning equipment and power tools, and performs work on ladders.

    + Completes basic, semi-skilled, maintenance duties. Replaces ballasts, relamps light fixtures, replaces switch/outlet, replaces vacuum breaker, rebuilds flushometer, paints, clears minor stoppages in plumbing fixtures, etc.

    + Operates snow blower, salt spreader and shovel. Assists with maintaining grounds, snow removal and other weather related events.

    + Moves furniture and sets up rooms for school events.

    + Assists with traffic during arrival, dismissal and school events.

    + Acts as safety team member during emergency drills.

    + Knowledgeable on green cleaning products and appropriate means of disinfecting.

    Job Qualifications

    Requirement:

    + One year of satisfactory experience in building cleaning and maintenance work; OR

    + Six months of satisfactory experience as a carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, mechanic, steam firer, or other related maintenance work; OR

    + One year of satisfactory experience as a Cleaner in a Nassau County school district

    *Important : This is a provisional appointment. In order to become a permanent employee, the successful candidate would need to take the Nassau County Civil Service Custodian exam when offered, and be reachable once the list is established. The exam is only open to individuals who have been a bona fide resident and dweller of Nassau County for at least one year immediately preceding the advertised date of examination and maintain that residency until appointed from the eligible list established as a result of the examination.
