    The Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering in the College of Engineering at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date in Fall 2026. While appointed to this position, you will accrue vacation and will be required to report leave monthly following TTU’s Operating Policy 70.01 and TTU System Regulation 07.12.     + Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and teaching experience

    + Industry/academic experience

    + Potential to obtain external research funding in traditional petroleum engineering and emerging areas such as, but not limited to, underground storage, geothermal, hydrogen, critical minerals, and produced water, based on establishing an independent research group and collaborating with other professionals on writing multi disciplinary proposals and research projects.

    The Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering is the college of engineering at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The engineering program has existed at Texas Tech University since 1925. Additionally, the Whitacre College of Engineering administers graduate engineering degree programs at the university's campus in Amarillo, Texas. All of the college's degree programs are accredited by ABET. The Whitacre College of Engineering is the first and, presently, the only school in the world to offer a Doctor of Philosophy degree in wind science and engineering.

    About the Department/School/Area:

    The Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering is flourishing with alumni involvement and corporate participation in the heart of the most active oil and gas basin in the world, the Permian Basin. The department has 11 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, instructors, five full-time staff members, and two technicians. The Terry Fuller Petroleum Engineering Research Building on the Engineering Key was completed in 2014. The building includes more than 42,000 square feet of modern classrooms, cutting-edge laboratories, and administrative space. The facility assists with recruiting students and internationally renowned faculty to further advance petroleum engineering. In addition, the Oilfield Technology Center (OTC) was completed in 2017. The OTC is a 10-acre teaching and research facility in the oilfield on Texas Tech property, 15 minutes from campus. It has a 4,000-square-foot building, a 4,000-foot test well, tank batteries, gas facilities, and a functional drilling rig.

    Faculty Qualifications:

    + A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related field

    + Demonstrated research skills and a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed journals

    + Knowledge in Geomechanics and Well Completion Engineering

    + Ability to develop and teach courses both in petroleum engineering and in new emerging areas

     

    This position is designated as involving access to critical infrastructure systems and/or research, as defined by Texas Executive Order GA-48. As such, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check prior to employment. Employees are required to comply with all applicable state and federal regulations related to the protection of critical infrastructure. Ongoing employment is dependent upon maintaining eligibility for access and successfully passing periodic security and compliance reviews.
