    The Religious Studies Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a predoctoral or postdoctoral fellowship position in Judaic Studies beginning August 1, 2026. This is a full-time, one-year position with a teaching load of four courses per year. The appointment has the possibility for renewal contingent on successful annual review and ongoing curricular needs. Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D. or ABD in a relevant field by August 2026.

     

    Candidates should have formal training and/or teaching and research experience in Judaic Studies and must be able to teach courses on topics such as, but not limited to Modern Jewish Thought, History of Judaism, Holocaust, Jewish Mysticism, Jewish Rite and Ritual, Gender and Sexuality in Judaism, Ancient Judaism, or Jewish Ethics. Methodological expertise is open. The successful candidate must articulate a desire to conduct research and teach at a small, residential, undergraduate college. Candidates should indicate their academic focus in their cover letter. Ability to contribute to other identified strategic needs of the Colleges (e.g., Africana Studies, Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, Public Health) is strongly preferred and may open possibilities for additional teaching.

With three graduate programs, students can build on their undergraduate degree with a Master of Arts in Higher Education Leadership, Master of Arts in Teaching, or a Master of Science in Management. Together, the experiences and mentorship at HWS prepare students to lead lives of consequence.

A completed application will include: a letter of interest that includes the candidate’s scholarly agenda; curriculum vitae; a teaching statement with attention to inclusivity in the classroom; graduate and undergraduate transcripts (scanned copies); 2-page maximum statement about the role of Judaic Studies on a liberal arts campus; and arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation to be submitted.
