GROUNDSKEEPER II
Responsibilities*
+ Operate power equipment and machinery including tractors, loaders, riding mowers, utility carts with or without brooms and plows, mechanical seeders and tillers, dump trucks, pickup trucks, and other motorized vehicles and equipment.
+ Remove ice and snow from walks, drives, parking lots, steps, ramps, structures and building entrances utilizing snow plow trucks, power brooms, blowers and blades, vehicle mounted salting equipment in a safe and effective manner.
+ Mix and apply selective and non-selective herbicides or fertilizers in properly calibrated proportions to lawns, athletic fields, and landscaped beds in a professional manner.
+ Perform common landscape maintenance techniques with hand and power tools.
+ Coordinate the work of assigned assistants.
+ Clean, maintain and lubricate assigned equipment and make adjustments for proper operation.
RELATED DUTIES
+ Perform basic and advanced groundskeeping duties in a wide range of landscape maintenance and construction installation applications with skill and interest.
+ Operate with proficiency a variety of hand tools related to landscape tasks including but not limited to: clippers, loppers, shears, saws, shovels, rakes, brooms, posthole diggers, fence post pounder, etc.
+ Operate with proficiency a variety of power tools related to landscape tasks including but not limited to: string trimmers, edgers, blowers, mowers, rototillers, hedge trimmers,chainsaws, polesaws, etc.
+ Operate motor vehicles safely at all times. Operate motor vehicles to perform assigned duties to travel, collect, haul, and dispose of refuse and debris, and as otherwise necessary toperform assigned duties.
+ Clean and maintain parking lots, parking structures, and other hardscape elements.
+ Load and unload trucks, pull weeds, pick up sticks, assist the mechanic with minor duties, plant flowers, etc., and accept a variety of tasks that are too numerous to list here but are basicto landscape maintenance and required to create and keep a functioning campus.
+ Take part in and complete all assigned duties in an efficient and effective manner and accept responsibility for caring for the campus and for your work.
+ Accept training and educational assignments and adjust actions as needed.
+ Perform basic building maintenance tasks.
+ Keep the campus and assigned areas safe, clean, and litter free.
+ Function as part of a team, assisting and cooperating with other members of the team moving toward common and assigned goals.
+ Work within the university?s sustainability and soil erosion and sediment control (SESC) initiatives.
+ A large portion of duties will be operating mowing equipment efficiently, performing snow and ice mitigation equipment, operating other landscape equipment, spraying herbicides, planting plants and digging, leaf/debris and trash pickup, assisting other crew members, and taking on other assigned duties.
Required Qualifications*
+ Graduation from high school or GED is necessary.
+ Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
+ Possession of a valid State of Michigan?s driver?s license in good standing is required at all times for employment in this position.
+ Must possess a Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators License on date of hire or within 3 months of start date. Licensing in sections 3A, 3B and 6 is required.
+ Maintaining legal licensing is required throughout employment.
+ Must be able to pass a MDOT physical and maintain certification at all times for employment in this position. UM-Dearborn will pay for testing.
+ Must be able to obtain and maintain an UM-Dearborn Industrial Truck Operator?s license (forklift) for employment in this position. Training and testing is provided.
+ Must have a clear understanding of spoken and written English.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Additional Information
The pay will follow the AFSCME contract pay grade: probation period $25.08 and $26.23 after a successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from a designated official.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
No supervisory responsibility.
This position is considered essential and critical and requires the ability to work a variable work shift to meet all seasonal and campus needs. Must be able to work a flexible shift including weekends, oncall, overtime, and possibly holidays.
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
