    Position Details

    General Statement

    The Student Wellness area is part of the Division of Student Success at MSU Bozeman. Student Wellness is comprised of three departments (Campus Recreation, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Student Health Services) and provides support, services, and programs for student and community health and wellbeing at MSU . Student Wellness is housed in a brand new state of the art facility that supports the collective work of the entire Student Wellness team.

     

    The Outdoor Program in the Campus Recreation Department is a dynamic unit that helps support students breaking down barriers to access the outdoors. The Trips Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and assessing comprehensive and accessible programs, services and activities that support the Campus Recreation Department Mission. The successful candidate demonstrates the ability to support, promote, and build community within the program area. Mitigation of Risk is essential in this position, and the coordinator will create effective risk management strategies that support safe and best practices. The qualified candidate will be required to work Monday- Friday and the occasional nights and weekends.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The Campus Recreation Outdoor Program Trips Coordinator will work to facilitate day and overnight trips through hiring, training and supporting student staff in creating safe and accessible experiences for student participants. The coordinator will stay current on industry standard safety practices and support trip types that align with Campus Recreation’s Mission. The successful candidate will be dynamic in their ability to support students, mitigate risk, and be part of the Campus Recreation team.

    Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Coordinate planning, training, staffing and safety processes for summer Expeditions trips series, day trips, overnight trips and outdoor credit-based courses.

    • Contribute to a staff culture of one team, one mission within Campus Recreation and Student Wellness.

    • Contribute to Campus Recreation annual budget, evaluation and strategic planning efforts.

    • Support student staff recruiting hiring and training.

    • Establish and maintain systems and processes to manage and mitigate risk.

    • Contribute to Campus Recreation and Student Wellness student employment systems, processes, and employee development program.

    • Assist with departmental outreach efforts to both internal and external stakeholders.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Education, Kinesiology, Health Promotion Recreation, Sports Management, Health and Human Development, or a related field) or a combination of education and or applicable experience.

    + Current certification in CPR , AED and Wilderness First Responder Certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.

    + Demonstrate the ability to lead training in field settings over multiple days.

    + Demonstrate experience developing and training staff on management systems for supporting field-based outdoor programs.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + Master’s degree in a relevant field (Education, Kinesiology, Health Promotion Recreation, Sports Management, Health and Human Development, or a related field) or a combination of education and or applicable experience.

    + Professional experience with outdoor recreation related programming.

    + Certification as an instructor in any of the following outdoor skills such as avalanche education, canoeing, kayak/rafting/swift water rescue, rock/ice climbing, wilderness medicine, mountain biking.

    + Demonstrate supervision experience of student staff.

    + Demonstrated experience training staff on risk management systems for supporting field-based outdoor programs.

    + Demonstrated ability to teach outdoor certification courses i.e., Wilderness Medicine, Climbing Wall Instructor Course, Avalanche Education, Raft Guide or Swiftwater Rescue training.

    + Experience working with Fusion software.

    + Experience working with land management agencies and managing commercial use permits.

    + Maintain knowledge of and implement current best practices for outdoor recreation, wellness and operations in collegiate recreation.

    + Seek opportunities to enhance the overall operations of Campus Recreation with intentional interdepartmental collaboration and development and implementation of integrated operation process.

    + Prioritize current industry standard risk strategies and collaborate with campus partners regarding risk mitigation.
