    Description

    Under the general supervision of the department’s GIS or Engineering staff, the GIS Intern will support the maintenance, analysis, and production of geographic data and mapping products used across multiple Public Works divisions, including Street Maintenance, Drainage, Landscape Maintenance, Traffic, Facilities Maintenance, Capital Projects, and Irrigation. The intern will assist with updating spatial databases, producing cartographic products, conducting data analysis, and supporting both office staff and field crews. This role provides hands-on experience applying GIS principles in a municipal environment where accurate data directly supports planning, operations, and decision making.

    Principal Duties

    + Develop, maintain, and updated GIS datasets, including geodatabases, shapefiles, and spatial database engine (SDE) layers).

    + Perform data conversion, projection, and integration of external data sources, including digitizing cartographic data and analyzing demographic and geographic information.

    + Interpret and research legal, archival, historical, and engineering-related documents to support accurate GIS records.

    + Produce maps and graphics for public hearings, meetings, reports, publications, and other departmental needs.

    + Conduct spatial analysis and prepare maps and supporting documents to inform operational and planning decisions.

    + Respond to internal and external requests for maps, documents, and GIS-related information, providing clear explanations as needed.

    + Support field and office operations, including assisting with GPS data collection, document and map archiving, and basic technical support.

    + Develop and maintain procedure manuals, metadata, specifications, and documentation for GIS datasets and workflows.

    + Operate and maintain plotters, printers, and wide-format scanners.

    + Maintain proficiency in GIS software, tools, and professional best practices.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    + Currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program in GIS or a related field.

    + Experience digitizing, creating, and maintaining shapefiles and geodatabases in a GIS system.

    + Familiarity with mapping, surveying, and engineering principles and practices as applied to municipal systems.?

    + Knowledge of Trimble GPS technology and the ability to read, interpret, and differentially correct coordinates.

     

    Hours: 30-40 hours/week; May 18, 2026 – July 31, 2026
