    Overview

     

    Position is responsible for completing annual fire and life safety inspections of educational, industrial, multi-family residential, institutional, mercantile, assembly, business, storage, utility and hazardous occupancies throughout the Indianapolis Fire Department district. Seeking out fire hazards and inspecting fire equipment, alarm systems, hose connections, standpipes, sprinkler systems, and emergency lights. Delivering public education classes to adults and children in a variety of settings.

    The purpose and mission of the Indianapolis Fire Department is to provide emergency and fire protection services for the City of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Firefighters are also trained as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, extrication specialists, top water and rescue divers, confined space, trench rescue and as hazardous materials technicians to help save lives, protect property, and the environment. The agency is able to do this by cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the residents of Indianapolis and Marion County.

    Position Responsibilities

    + Plans Review (New constructions or Renovations of facility)

    + Conducts complaints inspections called to their attention by citizens.

    + Enforces Building Codes and Fire Codes.

    + Issues Written Orders for violations, re-inspections, and in case of non-compliances seeks redress through courts.

    + Maintains working relationships with Board of Health. Code Enforcements, Department of Public Works, City Prosecutor's Office, State Fire Marshal, OSHA and local community action group.

    + Review Emergency Evaluation Plans.

    + Submit reports on computer forms, complaint investigations, weekly inspection totals accountability sheets, written orders, and State Fire Marshal reports.

    + Victim's Assistance: Able to respond to serious fires and work with other agencies to assist victims with housing, clothing and food.

    + Conducts Public Education programs to children and adults at Survive Alive and in schools, day care centers, nursing homes, businesses, etc.

    + Must be able to don IFD personal protective gear including mask and tank for demonstration purposes.

    + Serves in public event details to maintain fire prevention regulations for public safety.

    Qualifications

    High School Diploma or GED. Any combination of education and/or work experience totaling five years (5) years in acceptable. Knowledge of: Department Rules and Regulations: firefighting techniques, fire prevention, fire pre-planning, and inspections, Departmental Bulletins and Memorandums: policy statements, training, English usage, spelling, mathematics, and report writing. Public relations principles to deal effectively with the public, blue print specifications and diagrams, Law Ordinances, and Fire Codes pertaining to fire prevention. Ability to: Interact with a wide variety of governmental and private sector agencies, read, write legibly, subtract and divide whole numbers, pass pre-employment physical. Obtain and maintain a valid driver's license, and acquire State Certification in Inspector I/II and Fire & Life Safety Educator I & II within twelve (12) months of appointment.

     

    Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

     

    Associate Degree in Fire Science or related area plus three years of related experience.

     

    Independent Judgment

     

    The position requires the knowledge of and adherence to department/bureau policies and procedures, which will guide most of the employee(s) actions. Some independent judgment based on experience and training may be required due to the nature of the required job functions.
