    The ideal candidate in this position will develop, implement, and maintain volunteer and intern programs within the Victim Services Unit (VSU) of the Police Department. They will be responsible for recruiting, screening, and placing volunteers and college interns; developing and delivering orientation and training; coordinating schedules and assignments; and maintaining accurate program records to ensure smooth, consistent program operations. The position also collaborates with internal staff and external agencies to support program goals and provides administrative support for volunteer program activities and related VSU functions.

     

    We currently have one vacancy in the Reno Police Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

    Examples of Essential Functions

     

    + Coordinates, plans, organizes, and maintains the day-to-day operations of the VSU Outreach Program.

    + Develops and implements the process for solicitation, identification and selection of volunteers and college interns for the program; refers to qualified applicants for background investigation.

    + Schedules, coordinates, and conducts orientation and training of volunteers and college interns.

    + Assists in assembling and preparing the annual budget for the assigned area, monitors expenditures against budget.

    + Plans, organizes, coordinates, and participates in volunteer recognition programs and special events for crime victim awareness.

    + Prepares informational and educational materials and plan and implement outreach to inform and educate potential volunteers and college interns regarding opportunities and requirements.

    + Introduces volunteers and interns to the department and specifics of the program; provides ongoing information regarding policies, procedures and regulations; conducts informational training sessions regularly.

    + Reviews performance evaluations and/or complaints concerning volunteers and college interns; assists in counseling or providing additional training as necessary.

    + Recommends and participates in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishes schedules and methods for providing volunteer services; provides outreach and education; develops and implements policies and procedures.

    + Researches information, prepares materials, and makes presentations to various educational, civic, business, government and service groups regarding the Victim Services Unit and issues relating to victimization.

    + Attends and participates in a variety of boards, commissions, committees and professional group meetings; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.

    + Maintains accurate and complete records, information, and files; monitors, reviews, and evaluates activities such as monthly, quarterly and annual reports.

    + Prepares and distributes quarterly newsletter for the Victim Services Unit; collects relevant features, photographs, data and other information.

    + Creates a regular publishing schedule for Victim Services Unit social media content; ensures announcements, training opportunities, links to newsletter, and awareness activities are posted to the appropriate department sites.

    + Provides responsible staff assistance to the Police Department as needed and related to the assigned area of responsibility.

    + Performs other duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.

     

    Combinations of relevant work experience and education that are equivalent to the following are acceptable.*

    Education:

    Graduation from high school or equivalent.

    Experience:

    Two years of verifiable or paid experience with a public or community-based service organization in program development or administration which has included experience coordinating, supervising or training paid or unpaid staff. Experience working with individuals in social services, counseling or other related fields.

    Substitution:

    One year of college education (thirty credits of college-level coursework) in public or business administration, marketing, public relations, a social or behavioral science, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    Must possess a valid driver's license or otherwise demonstrate the ability to independently get to and from multiple work locations as required.

    Examination Process:

    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online assessments which includes a Cognitive Abilities Test and an Employee Personality Profile; along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:

     

    Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 80%

    Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:

    Seniority Points:

    Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:

    The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.

    Appointment and Certification:

    Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
