    The ideal candidate in this position will perform a wide variety of duties involved in providing support to and serving as an advocate for the rights and protection of victims of crimes which may include fulfilling the parameters of the program objectives of the grant. They will be able to assess each individual victim's needs and work together with other community resources to fulfill those needs including shelter, counseling, referrals, food, property return, general advocacy, and support.

     

    + This position requires working varying shifts, weekends and/or holidays

    + Applicants will be required to pass a polygraph, background and drug screening as part of the hiring process

     

    We currently have one vacancy in the Reno Police Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This is a grant-funded appointed position.* This recruitment will establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

    Examples of Essential Functions

    + Provide support to and serve as an advocate for the rights and protection of victims of crime; provide advocacy by phone and/or in person to victims of crime.

    + Assist victims of crime when requested by law enforcement at crime scenes, hospitals, or other safe locations; provide support, referrals, and information to victims, including crime victims’ rights and victim compensation information/application; send appropriate literature to victims via mail.

    + Contact victims on a follow-up basis to provide additional information, case status, and resource materials and referrals; keep victims informed with accurate information regarding the status of their case.

    + Complete case intake forms on each contact; document the services provided and referrals made; conduct thorough case management on all cases advocacy is provided to include follow-up contacts.

    + Prepare statistics regarding program operations; prepare quarterly reports on advocacy provided.

    + Work closely and interact with detectives, patrol officers, supervisors, service providers, other advocates, other governmental agencies, and the general public to ensure victims’ rights and needs are addressed.

    + Provide support on all tasks relevant to the grant under the purview of this position; to include but not limited to, providing information for application, reporting, and documentation and analysis.

    + Perform duties outlined within the scope of work for the grant objectives, as included within the executed award document.

    + Provide training to City personnel on victim services topics, as outlined in the grant funding for the position.

    + Perform related duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.

    Education :

    A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, social work, or a related field.

    Substitution:

    Each year of additional relevant work experience in social work, counseling, or victim advocacy, working to meet the needs of victims of violent crime, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the Bachelor’s Degree.

    Experience :

    Three years of increasingly responsible social work, counseling, or victim advocacy experience, of which a minimum of 18 months of the experience must include providing advocacy for and working to meet the immediate needs of victims of violent crime, preferably within a law enforcement setting.

    License :

    Valid driver’s license.

    Examination Process:

    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online assessments which includes a Cognitive Abilities Test and an Employee Personality Profile, along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:

    Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:

    The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.

    Appointment and Certification:

    Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
