We are seeking a **_Hazardous Materials Technician_** who is responsible for the handling of hazardous materials (chemical) generated by the Johns Hopkins University and Health System.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
+ Responsible for the handling of chemical waste generated by the Johns Hopkins University and Health System.
+ Provide collection services at specified locations and times throughout the institutions.
+ Segregate material received by EPA/DOT reactivity categories.
+ Consolidate compatible material for disposal, as required under state and federal regulations.
+ Pick-up chemical waste from laboratories.
+ Respond to emergency situations involving chemical spills.
+ Maintain accurate logs required by regulation and/or policy.
+ Coordinate the disposal of waste at EPA permitted facilities and transportation of the material to these sites.
+ Generate appropriate manifest for hazardous materials, forward appropriate copies to the state, and maintain an accurate file on manifests generated.
+ Follow the policies and procedures of the University and Health System for the handling of chemical wastes.
The ideal candidate will have a general knowledge of hazardous waste regulations and the procedures for properly consolidating and packaging hazardous wastes. Must be capable of working with hazardous materials safely and pass The Johns Hopkins Institutions’ medical certification to wear respiratory protection. Must be able to perform the required work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, as necessary. Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds and transport drums weighing 450 pounds using a drum hand truck. Must be able to stand/walk for 80 – 100% of workday.
May require after-hours emergency response. Must be able to report when needed. Must have a current driver’s license and vehicle as the applicant may have to travel to off-site locations to perform duties and attend training classes. Ability to drive a manual transmission a plus.

During the Influenza ('the flu') season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
Minimum Qualifications
+ High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
+ Two years of related experience.
+ Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Associate’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
+ The HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) 40-hour course must be completed within the first 60 days of employment. Current certificate holders are preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $18.20 - $33.90 HRLY (Commensurate w/exp.)
