Are you a friendly, team-oriented person that likes to drive? If so, the position of Delivery Driver/Clerk may be for you! The Community Services Department of the City of Stockton is made of Library and Recreation and delivery duties are shared between the Delivery Driver/Clerk and other part-time drivers. Delivery routes start at the Chavez Library in downtown Stockton and routes are spread throughout San Joaquin County. Incumbents work 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday- Friday.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by the Stockton City Employees' Association.(Classified/Represented)
This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time regular status, at the time of application, City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity and successful candidates will be places on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list or a combination of both. These lists may be used to fill future vacancies.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting, as well as a medical back evaluation.
Veteran's Preference:
This position is eligible to receive Veteran's Preference Points for entrance into the Civil Service. Veteran's Preference will not be granted on the promotional list. If you believe you may qualify for Veteran's Preference, a DD-214 Member 4 copy indicating at least 181 consecutive days of service must be received in the Human Resources office (see supplemental questionnaire for details in submitting DD-214 copy) by the final filing date.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This class is responsible for the transport of a variety of library materials within the library system. Work is performed under supervision and within clearly established guidelines.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
+ Operates a light van or truck for pick up and delivery; cleans and schedules necessary maintenance for vehicle.
+ Collects, sorts, and distributes books and other materials with the main library and from library branches and other community stops.
+ Sorts, shelves, moves, and maintains books and cartons on order.
+ Picks up and delivers payroll checks to the main library.
+ Transports branch library daily cash receipts to the main library; delivers library cash receipts to the Finance Department.
+ Checks and signs for deliveries to the main library, including equipment, computers, and supplies.
+ Collects and distributes daily mail and operates a mail scale; prepares books and films for mailing; operates an automated mailing machine; sorts, stamps, and delivers mail to the U.S. Post Office.
+ Performs a variety of minor repairs at the main and branch libraries as assigned.
+ Picks up and transports high priority, fragile, and expensive equipment, requiring special handling.
+ Picks up, packages, and delivers equipment requiring repair.
+ Performs simple cleaning work as assigned.
+ May serve as back-up for the Bookmobile Driver/Clerk.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED. Driving experience involving the pick up and delivery of materials is desirable.
Other Requirements:
+ Must possess a valid California driver's license.
+ Must be physically able to lift and carry boxes weighing 50 pounds.
Knowledge of:
+ Efficient operation of a light van, truck or other delivery-type vehicle;
+ Traffic laws and regulations;
+ Safety principles and practices related to the operation of a delivery van or truck;
+ Basic English language usage;
+ Basic business arithmetic.
Skill in:
+ Operating a delivery van or truck in an efficient and safe manner;
+ Observing traffic rules and regulations;
+ Following oral and written instructions;
+ Sorting, stamping, collecting, and delivering mail and other library materials and items;
+ Performing simple clerical work and making basic arithmetic calculations;
+ Establishing and maintaining working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Physical/Mental Abilities:
+ Mobility – Constant standing or sitting for long periods of time while operating a keyboard; frequent bending; occasional walking, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing and pulling;
+ Lifting/Carrying – Constant lifting/carrying of 0 to 10 pounds; frequent lifting/carrying of 11 to 25 pounds; occasional lifting of 26 to 50 pounds;
+ Vision – Ability to read fine print, and/or normal type size print, and detect color; ability to read and see PC screens; ability to read and produce printed material and information displayed on a visual display terminal;
+ Dexterity – Constant fingering (typing, picking, pinching), repetitive use of both hands, simple grasping and fine manipulation of either/both hands; occasional power grasping, pushing and pulling of either/both hands, and reaching above and below shoulder level;
+ Hearing/Talking – Ability to detect specific noises, proper equipment operation; ability to understand what people are saying in normal conversation, over the telephone, and frequently over noise;
+ Special Requirements – Frequently requires working evenings; occasionally requires working nights and weekends, and driving;
+ Emotional/Psychological – Ability to concentrate, make decisions, work with the public, exercise sound judgment, handle stressful situations, and work alone;
+ Environmental Conditions – Occasional to frequent exposure to noise, indoor cold/heat, working around equipment and machinery;
+ Working Conditions – Primarily performed in an office environment which is typically quiet;

The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best meet the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
