Protection and Controls Technician (P&C Technician)
Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Controls Technician to install, maintain, and repair protection and control systems in power substations. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and computer skills to ensure the seamless operation of microprocessor relays, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, pumps, motors, and other critical components.
Responsibilities
+ Install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying and associated devices.
+ Perform calibration of various types of protection and control relays and devices.
+ Assist in creating and maintaining protection and control documentation.
+ Assist the assigned project lead with field assignments.
+ Install, program, and maintain protection and control relays and devices.
+ Participate in process hazard analyses.
+ Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and practices.
+ Perform operational checks and tests on substation equipment such as relays, transformers, and circuit breakers.
+ Troubleshoot and perform preventive and emergent maintenance on substation equipment.
+ Operate and interpret readings from test equipment like multimeters and oscilloscopes.
+ Verify that wiring construction work is performed according to design documentation.
+ Document all completed work following company policies and procedures.
+ Adhere to all safety rules and procedures.
+ Provide technical guidance and direction to other teams on protection and control issues.
+ Respond to system problems during after-hours on-call rotations.
+ Deliver exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
Essential Skills
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
+ 0-3 years of experience as a controls technician or similar role.
+ Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
+ Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
+ Working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs.
+ Experience with AC and DC systems.
+ Proven troubleshooting skills.
+ Knowledge of safe work practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Associate’s degree in electrical engineering, industrial maintenance, or related field preferred.
+ Experience with electromechanical or microprocessor protection relay installation and testing.
+ Field experience commissioning and/or maintaining electrical equipment.
+ Excellent computer skills.
+ Ability to exercise clear judgment and make timely, rational decisions.
+ Good writing and communication skills.
+ Familiarity with substation equipment is preferred.
Work Environment
The work environment involves working in power substations and requires adherence to safety protocols. Technicians may be required to work outside regular business hours during on-call rotations. The role involves working with various testing equipment and ensuring that all tasks are documented accurately according to company procedures.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Montgomery, AL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
