Job Description
As a Controls Technician 1, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing protection and control systems used in power substations. These systems include microprocessor relays, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, pumps, and motors. Your role is crucial to ensuring the safety and efficiency of power distribution.
Responsibilities
+ Install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying and associated devices.
+ Perform calibration of various types of protection and control relays and devices.
+ Assist in creating and maintaining protection and control documentation.
+ Support project leads with field assignments and installations.
+ Participate in process hazard analyses.
+ Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and practices.
+ Perform operational checks and tests on substation equipment, including microprocessor and electromechanical relays and controls.
+ Troubleshoot and perform preventive and emergent maintenance on substation equipment.
+ Operate and interpret readings from test equipment such as digital multimeters and digital oscilloscopes.
+ Verify wiring construction work against detailed design print documentation.
+ Document all completed work in accordance with policies and procedures.
+ Follow safe behaviors and adhere to all safety rules and procedures.
+ Provide technical guidance and direction to other groups on protection and control issues.
+ Respond to system problems during after-hours on-call rotations.
+ Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
Essential Skills
+ Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles.
+ Proficient in PLC control, troubleshooting, and programming.
+ Experience in electrical troubleshooting and maintenance.
+ Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
+ Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
+ Working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs.
+ Experience with AC and DC systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree in electrical engineering, industrial maintenance, or related field preferred.
+ 0-3 years of experience as a controls technician or similar role.
+ Field experience commissioning and/or maintaining electrical equipment is desired.
+ Basic understanding of electrical protection and/or control circuitry is desired.
+ Excellent computer skills and proven troubleshooting capabilities.
+ Knowledge of safe work practices.
+ Ability to exercise clear judgment and make timely, rational decisions.
+ Able to manage multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.
+ Good writing and communication skills.
Work Environment
The role involves working in power substations, which require adherence to safety protocols and procedures. You will be utilizing various test equipment, such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes, and working with PLCs and HMIs. The position may require participation in after-hours on-call rotations and managing multiple tasks under deadlines. The dress code is professional and in accordance with safety standards.

This is a Contract position based out of Mobile, AL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
