Prototype Shop Apprentice
Job Description
As a Prototype Shop Apprentice, you will be responsible for reading blueprints or job orders to determine product specifications such as dimensions and tolerances, as well as tooling instructions like fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, and depth of cut. You will move controls to position tools and workpieces in relation to each other, set specified feeds, speeds, and depth of cut, and observe machine operations to verify the conformance of machined workpieces to specifications. Your role will also involve operating various machines and equipment, and completing in-process inspection sheets.
Responsibilities
+ Read and interpret blueprints or job orders for product specifications.
+ Determine tooling instructions and sequence of operations.
+ Position tools and workpieces, set specified feeds, speeds, and depth of cut.
+ Verify conformance of machined workpieces to specifications.
+ Operate machines and equipment other than machine tools.
+ Complete in-process inspection sheets.
+ Spend 33% of time learning CNC mills and lathes.
+ Spend 66% of time on other shop tasks in the prototype department, including inspection, deburring, and basic assembly.
Essential Skills
+ Proficiency in reading blueprints.
+ Experience with calipers.
+ Interest in learning various manufacturing processes in a CNC shop.
+ Basic blueprint skills.
+ CNC experience, including lathe, CNC machine, CNC mill, and CNC lathe.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience with deburring.

Work Environment
The role operates on the 1st shift, typically from 6 am to 2:30 or 3:30 pm, with some flexibility in hours. You will primarily be on the shop floor in the Prototype department, which is clean and climate-controlled. Occasionally, tasks will be performed in a clean room. The environment includes the smell of cutting grease typical of a CNC shop.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hanover Park, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $23.00/hr.
