    Qualifications

    Educational and other Requirements for the position:

    + MD / PhD in sciences

    Experience Required:

    + 1-2 years of surgical experience, neurosurgical preferable with interventional experience in vivo and in vitro experimentation preferred

    Goals/Outcomes of the Research Project:

    The Post Doctoral Fellow is experienced in the conduct of research involving the understanding of human diseases and improvement of human health. They will assist in the operation of the clinical laboratory, engages in clinical investigation or other research, production, technical writing, and may mentor less senior research lab staff.

     

    The Post Doctoral Fellow who fills this role will be working to assist Drs. Shigematsu, Berenstein a Fifi in developing a complete vascular malformation research program. The center will be focused on clinical and translational research with the goal to improve the lives of patients with these diseases. The lab will investigate pathogenesis, expand our clinical registries, and develop and test treatments including drugs and novel devices.

    Responsibilities

    Technical Duties: (include any protocols)

    1. Conducts research to develop methodologies, instrumentation and procedures for medical application, analyzing data and presenting findings.

    2. Designs and conducts complex clinical research studies requiring the determination and evaluation of alternative methods, computational modeling, diagnosis and treatment.

    3. Plans and directs studies to investigate human or animal disease, preventive methods, and treatments for disease.

    4. Under the mentorship of Drs. Shigematsu, Berenstein & Fifi, the candidate will facilitate execution of clinical laboratory operations within animals. This will involve:

    1. Working to reproduce endovascular procedures under x-ray guidance in vitro and in animal models

    2. Testing treatments such as radiosurgery, glue embolization, coiling, as well as histological assessment of tissue directly after intervention

    3. Performing surgeries on both currently available animal models as well as novel models

    5. Follows strict safety procedures when handling materials to avoid contamination.

    6. Teaches principles of medicine and medical and laboratory procedures to physicians, residents, students, and research staff.

    7. Confers with health departments, industry personnel, physicians, and others to develop health safety standards and public health improvement programs.

    8. Develops treatments and designs research tools and techniques.

    9. Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies.

    10. Develops hypotheses to be tested and methodology for evaluating results.

    11. Leads protocol writing for various projects (both clinical and lab based) with oversight from Principal Investigators and assistance from other research staff

    12. Works to submit relevant protocols to appropriate regulatory bodies as needed (IACUC - Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and PPHS – Program for Protection of Human Subjects)

    13. Examines the results of clinical trials and adjusts the dosage levels to reduce negative side effects or to induce better results.

    14. Communicates research results to the scientific community via published papers.

    15. Develops new proposals for research and obtain support for new and/ or continuing research activities.

    16. Makes recommendations that have a major impact on extensive scientific research activities.

    17. Performs other related duties.

    Compensation Statement

    Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $72500 - $80000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
