    Job Description

    The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the ESL teacher in a flexible capacity, assisting in either the Introduction to English, Beginner, or High Intermediate classes. Classes have different schedules and modes of presentation (in-person or hybrid), providing the intern with a diverse range of experiences. The intern will also be instrumental in supporting tutoring sessions outside of class hours. The classes aim to empower students by gaining the language needed to navigate everyday life in the US and empower students. Using engaging and student-centered lessons, the intern will help with administrative tasks, lead activities, provide support in conversation practice, tutor, and substitute. Finally, the intern will be a key collaborator with members of the Adult Education team to ensure clients’ immediate educational needs are met.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Assist lead teacher in ESL classes for immigrants, newly arrived refugees, and asylee clients,using interactive, learner-centered activities.

    + Provide tutoring lessons

    + Record daily attendance for the class.

    + Assist with class prep (for example, photocopying lesson materials)

    + Conduct outreach to students to ensure attendance.

    + Meet with lead teacher to receive instruction and guidance on role in class.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

    + The intern will learn how to effectively manage a classroom with students of various backgrounds and English Language levels.

    + The intern will learn to work as a team to effectively prepare and execute lessons and activities.

    + The intern will practice teaching skills for English learners.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    + Experience teaching ESL to adults, and a bachelor’s degree preferred

    + Experience working with adult students from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills

    + Confidence facilitating groups.

    + Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment

    + Reliable, responsible, and dedicatedto the position until the end of the semester

    + Fluency in Spanish, French, Pulaar, Ukrainian, Russian, or Dari is a plus.
