BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:
The Distinguished Technical Fellow serves as the organization's highest-level technical expert, providing strategic technical leadership in manufacturing research and innovation. This role shapes the technical direction of research initiatives while ensuring rigorous scientific standards across all projects. Working in close collaboration with the Director of Manufacturing Research and Technology, the Distinguished Technical Fellow advances the organization's technical capabilities through deep expertise in machining dynamics, manufacturing processes, and emerging technologies. The position combines hands-on technical guidance with thought leadership to drive innovation, mentor technical talent, and enhance the organization's reputation in the manufacturing community.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Provide strategic technical input for organizational research roadmap development, ensuring alignment with industry trends and business objectives.
+ Spearhead initiatives to explore emerging technologies and integrate them into practical, high-impact applications for manufacturing advancement.
+ Propose and secure funding for innovative research projects by identifying opportunities and building strong business cases.
+ Establish and uphold high standards for scientific rigor and technical quality in all research and development activities.
+ Conduct detailed reviews of methodologies, experimental designs, and findings to validate results and ensure alignment with industry best practices.
+ Drive the creation of advanced methodologies, tools, and processes to improve manufacturing efficiency, precision, and scalability.
+ Provide technical mentorship and guidance to researchers, engineers, and team leaders, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence.
+ Oversee the development of technical training programs and workshops to build organizational knowledge and expertise.
+ Partner with leadership to identify skill gaps, create individualized development plans, and cultivate future leaders.
+ Represent the organization at industry-leading conferences, forums, and academic events to enhance its technical reputation and visibility.
+ Build and strengthen strategic partnerships with universities, research institutions, industry bodies, and government agencies.
+ Publish high-impact research papers, white papers, and technical articles that establish the organization as a thought leader.
+ Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC’s vision and unity of purpose.
+ Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
What You Need:
+ Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field with focus on machining dynamics or manufacturing processes
+ 20+ years of experience in manufacturing research, with significant contributions to the field
+ Distinguished academic career with extensive publication record in high-impact journals
+ Proven history of successful research program development and leadership
+ Track record of securing and managing major research grants and initiatives
Bonus Points If You Have:
+ Comprehensive mastery of machining dynamics, process optimization, and manufacturing systems
+ Expert knowledge of mechanical vibrations, structural dynamics, and process modeling
+ Strong history of collaboration with national laboratories, industry partners, and academic institutions
+ Experience serving in technical leadership roles in professional societies and standards organizations
+ Significant portfolio of patents and technical innovations in manufacturing
+ Outstanding track record in mentoring and developing technical talent
+ Exceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts for various audiences
Other Requirements:
+ A valid driver’s license may be required.
+ Position may require up to 50% of travel
+ This position may require access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations Information (“ITAR”) and/or Controlled Unclassified Information (“CUI”).
