The Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectional Justice (GSIJ) Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning August 1, 2025. This is a full-time, one-year position with a teaching load of five courses per year. GSIJ is an umbrella department for three distinct major/minor programs: Gender & Feminist S tudies; LGBTQ+ Studies; and Bodies, Disability, & Justice.
We are especially interested in candidates whose work centers LGBTQ+ Studies and who can contribute to a vibrant department grounded in transdisciplinary, justice-oriented approaches within a liberal arts context. The teaching responsibilities will include “Introduction to Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectional Justice” as well as other courses connected to the candidate’s expertise.
The salary range for this position is $49,300 - $56,666.67.
We welcome candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including but not limited to gender and sexuality studies, disability studies, public health, media and cultural studies, environmental studies, and social work. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student-centered pedagogy, inclusive classroom practices, and the pursuit of critical thinking. We particularly encourage applicants whose teaching and research may contribute to other programs and departments across campus.
Ph.D. by August 2025 is preferred, though ABD candidates will be considered. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of effective undergraduate teaching, and experience with introductory-level instruction in gender, sexuality, and intersectional justice is especially welcome.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a sample Intro to GSIJ syllabus, and teaching statement with attention to inclusivity in the classroom via Interfolio. Application materials should specifically discuss how the applicant could teach at least two of our departmental offerings in addition to the intro course. Contact information for three confidential professional references should also be provided. Review of applications will begin immediately, and all applications received by May 9 will be given full consideration. For further inquiries regarding the position, please contact Michelle Martin-Baron, Search Committee Chair, at [email protected] .
Questions regarding Interfolio or visa status should be directed to Human Resources ( [email protected] ).
