    Position:                                     Speech and Language Pathologist

     

    Reports to:                                 Director of Specialized Services and Principal

    Job Summary:

    The primary responsibilities of the Speech Language Pathologist include: identifying students with communication disorders; planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on student success, helping students to maximize communication abilities; recommending treatment plans; and providing direction to teachers and parents.

    Essential Functions:

    + Assesses students' communication skills (e.g. articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc.) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility, and developing recommendations for treatment.

    + Provides speech and language therapy to students for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on student success and for maximizing student’s overall communication abilities.

    + Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. parents, teachers, physicians, administration, IEP team members, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving any issues, and providing services in compliance with the Milwaukee College Prep guidelines, state guidelines, and A.S.H.A. (American Speech Language Hearing Association) guidelines.

    + Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g. testing/screening, IEPs, parent conferences, pre-referral staffing, etc.) for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to parents/students/staff.

    + Develops and assists in implementation of treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with regulatory requirements.

    + Instructs eligible students and teaching staff in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g. hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication devices).

    + Interprets medical reports (within the scope of practice for a Speech Language Pathologist) for the purpose of providing information and/or ensuring that treatment and intervention plans are appropriate.

    + Maintains files/records and prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance, documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.

    + Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g. training, IEPs, team meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information.

    + Performs site visits at multiple work sites including home visits for the purpose of providing therapy and assistance as required.

    + Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' needs.

    + Responds to inquiries (e.g. parents, teachers, staff, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or referral as appropriate.

    + Provide model for students of exemplary conduct.

    Other Duties:

    + Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

    + Attends trainings, SLP department meetings, and staff meetings

    + Occasional transport of supplies and equipment to a variety of sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed

    Qualifications:

    Education

    Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

     

    Additional, ongoing professional development encouraged and preferred in order to maintain CEUs and professional credentials in the field of speech language pathology.

    Experience

    Prior SLP-related experience preferred; however, CF candidates may also apply.

     

    Licensing

     

    Wisconsin Certification as Speech Language Pathologist through Department of Education. Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Certification required annually before first day with scholars .

     

    Skills/Attributes

     

    + Must have a belief in and be in alignment with Milwaukee College Prep’s core beliefs and educational philosophy

    + Must be passionate and tenacious in ensuring each scholar’s success

    + Must be able to apply assessment instruments and operate specialized equipment used in the treatment of communication disorders

    + Able to prepare and maintain accurate records.

    + Must be familiar with pertinent educational, SPED-related, and speech/language-related codes, policies, regulations and/or laws.

    + Able to translate therapy data into meaningful educational activities.

    Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

    The majority of this job involves sitting, mostly indoors. A minor portion of the job involves getting up and down from a seated/lower position, and walking up and down some stairs every day.     Job Parameters:  (Full time)

     

    + Vacation – between 6/15 and 8/1 plus staff vacation days during school year (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc). 10 paid personal days per year.

    + Eligible to participate in retirement plan, with school matching up to 5% of salary after their first year.
