    Job Description

    The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets, attacking the scourge of illegal dumping, and clearing snow and ice. The Department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms, 705 salt spreaders, and several dozen bike lane operations machines. Under the Adams Administration, the Department is aggressively cleaning more parts of the city than ever before, including over 1,000 long-ignored areas spread across every neighborhood. With the highest wintertime uniformed headcount in 20 years, DSNY is more equipped than ever to remove snow and ice from the approximately 19,000 lane miles of City streets.

     

    The Bureau of Solid Waste Management is seeking an Environmental Engineer Intern. Under direct supervision will perform elementary environmental and/or fire protection engineering work in the field, office, or laboratory and receive training in engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility on the Assistant Environmental Engineer level. The work and training may be in one or more of the following engineering areas: development, design, drafting, specifications, estimating, construction, inspection, operations, maintenance, and in the areas described under Examples of Typical Tasks below; prepares associated reports and correspondence and maintains records; performs related work.

    The Environmental Engineer Intern may also, under supervision:

    - Assists in research, investigations, or studies, related to the environmental and/or fire protection engineering functions or activities of a department or agency.

     

    - Assists in conducting emission inventory, discharge analysis, and other environmental engineering studies. Collects data to determine the source, nature, and extent of contaminants.

     

    - Analyzes equipment operation and process to determine operational or equipment changes on control equipment for effective control of emissions, discharges, or other environmental contaminants.

     

    - Assists in the conduct of environmental and/or fire protection engineering pilot studies, source and area sampling, including collection of samples, and other engineering tests on equipment and processes.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING INTE - 20616

    Qualifications

    A baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; or

    A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work.
