WSP is currently initiating a search for a **Traffic Engineer** to be located in Kentucky (Lexington, Louisville, Northern KY). Be involved in projects with our **Kentucky Traffic, Safety, and TSMO Team** and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. The successful candidate should have experience working in groups and have a desire to participate in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment, as the traffic, safety, and TSMO Kentucky team works closely on projects across the Midwest.
Your Impact
+ Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, maps, technical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
+ Perform professional traffic engineering work and assist with conducting investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
+ Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way and the driver is provided with all of the necessary information and safety metrics to help ensure that their driving experience is safe and efficient.
+ Utilize tools to interpret and evaluate traffic counts for roadways and intersections to determine the volume of traffic, where the traffic is going to and from, and the type of traffic on the roadway.
+ Takes a second look at safety features on the road, recommending traffic safety enhancement projects on the basis of respective studies.
+ Determine appropriate signage, signals, and pavement markings along a new or existing road.
+ Investigate crash data and determines if changes can be made to roadways or intersections to make it safer for all who use the roads.
+ Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
+ Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
+ Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
+ Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
+ Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
+ Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during field/site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk mitigation activities.
+ Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
+ Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects.
+ Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
+ Support project teams and direct subject matter experts, and third-party partners to design and implement ITS **(Intelligent Transportation Systems)** and system projects.
+ Support client management efforts for key market clients and identify new opportunities across the region.
+ Manage work across multiple clients and projects simultaneously
+ Identify the best resources for engagement to address the client’s identified needs
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
+ 4-6 years of experience
+ Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation, Transportation Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
+ Knowledge with DOT advisory circulars and procedures.
+ Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
+ Experience with roadway planning, design, and construction management; including project involvement in a variety of infrastructure projects, rehabilitation and construction of pavement, navigational aids, grading design, and safety management.
+ Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
+ Knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
+ Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
+ Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
+ Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
+ Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
+ Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
+ Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
+ Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
+ Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
+ Understands the purpose of each step of the System Engineering V Diagram
+ Knowledgeable of various ITS applications
+ Experience with programming of traffic signals
+ Understanding of detection technologies
+ Able to support ITS/Signals Design through guidance and reviews
+ Knowledgeable of ATMS platforms
+ Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
+ Strong technical writing, analytical and communication skills.
+ Detail-oriented with an emphasis on quality work products.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Master’s Degree in Engineering.
+ Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
+ Knowledgeable of KYTC processes and operations
+ Knowledgeable of big data applications and data uses
+ Knowledgeable of ATSPMs
+ Ability to support coding efforts to manipulate data
+ Ability to support design efforts with CAD
+ Background in a traffic operations center
+ Experience with conceptual plans, specifications, and proposal development.
