Summary of the Position: The Senior HVAC Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing HVAC systems and support utilities for nuclear waste treatment and vitrification processes. This role requires strong HVAC design experience, excellent documentation skills, and the ability to collaborate with multiple engineering disciplines and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Design, develop, and modify HVAC components and processes following Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), codes, standards, and Bechtel design guides.
+ Evaluate, select, and apply standard mechanical engineering methods and codes (e.g., ASME AG-1, ASHRAE, SMACNA, DOE guides).
+ Prepare and review engineering documents such as:
+ Technical reports, studies, and calculations
+ Ventilation and Instrumentation diagrams
+ Equipment data sheets
+ Procurement documents (e.g., material requisitions, equipment specifications)
+ Assist with conceptual studies, design proposals, and proposal documentation.
+ Maintain system documentation for equipment installation, maintenance, and operations.
+ Collaborate with specialty groups, other engineering disciplines, Construction, and O&M teams.
+ Communicate regularly with clients to report design progress and address inquiries.
+ Provide technical assistance to resolve code and regulatory issues.
+ Guide junior engineers and review their work.
+ Deliver monthly “brown bag” presentations on HVAC topics.
+ Mentor team members and support professional development.
Qualifications:
+ EIT Certification required (PE license expected within 1 year).
+ Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or international equivalent) and 5–8 years of relevant experience, or 10–15 years of related work experience
+ Proficiency in HVAC load calculations, pressure drop analysis, duct design, and equipment selection.
+ Experience with relevant codes: ASME AG-1, ASHRAE, SMACNA, DOE Nuclear Cleaning Handbook.
+ Competency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
+ Familiarity with Bechtel Procurement tools and experience with WTP is a plus.
