The Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships (EIP) at Research Foundation of the State University of New York at Binghamton University leads a variety of programs and services designed to support business development, commercialization, and entrepreneurship for students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. One of its key initiatives is New Energy New York (NENY), a coalition funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration and Empire State Development. NENY brings together academic, industry, government, and nonprofit partners to build a resilient, community-backed, and innovation-driven battery and energy storage ecosystem. Based at Binghamton University, NENY is driving regional transformation through infrastructure development, technology and innovation, workforce development, community engagement, and entrepreneurship. NENY aims to accelerate the growth of the U.S. battery and energy storage industry by fostering innovation, advancing commercialization, and creating high-quality jobs through the development of a strong manufacturing and technology ecosystem in Upstate New York.
Position Summary
The Deputy Director is responsible for the strategic oversight, management, and execution of programs supported by EDA BBBRC. This leadership role ensures that programs are delivered effectively, align with funding requirements, achieve performance outcomes, and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The Deputy Director serves as a liaison between government agencies, partner organizations, internal teams, and the communities served. The Deputy Director of NENY as a key leader will support the continued growth and operational strength of this nationally recognized advanced energy initiative. This position will support the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of EIP in managing internal operations, advancing strategic priorities, and ensuring the effective implementation of cross-sector programs focused on energy innovation, workforce development, and regional economic growth.
Key Responsibilities
+ Lead NENY funded programs and monitor program goals, timelines, deliverables, and budgets across multiple workstreams, ensuring high-quality outcomes.
+ Supervise direct report for NENY related program staff members by providing strategic guidance to the programs, performance evaluations, and professional development support.
+ Support reporting requirements and data tracking for federal and state funders, including coordination of documentation, allowable costs, procurement procedures and performance metrics.
+ Serve as a strategic thought partner to the programs and work closely with AVP, contributing to decision-making and long-range planning.
+ Lead internal staff meetings, planning sessions, and project workflows to support smooth and efficient operations.
+ Provide indirect oversight and coordinate with additional staff under the NENY pillars to ensure cross-team alignment and effective project execution.
+ Represent NENY at external meetings, events, and convenings in coordination with the AVP.
+ Strengthen and maintain relationships with local, regional, national, and international partners across industry, government, education, and community sectors.
+ Facilitate collaboration between partners, sub-awardees, and internal units to ensure compliance and accountability.
+ Contribute to external communications, public presentations, and strategic messaging for NENY.
+ Collaborate with Grants management teams to develop, manage, and monitor program budgets, ensuring accurate expenditure tracking, forecasting and timely submission of financial reports.
+ Approve expenditures, budget modifications, and cost allocations in accordance with funding requirements and internal controls.
Job Requirements:
+ Master's degree required, preferably in business, public administration, economic development, or a related field.
+ Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
+ Proven success in managing multidisciplinary teams and complex programs in a collaborative environment.
+ Strong organizational, communication, and strategic thinking skills.
+ Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of public- and private-sector constituents and organizations is required.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, project management tools, and video conferencing platforms.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Knowledge of federally funded programs (e.g., EDA, DOE, NSF) and associated reporting requirements.
+ Experience collaborating with academic institutions, regional economic development efforts, or business incubation programs.
+ Background in advanced energy, technology innovation, workforce development, higher education, or public-private partnerships.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills, including at least two years of grant writing experience.
+ Demonstrated commitment to community engagement.
Additional Information:
Salary: $99,850 - 104,210. Please note, this position involves a combination of collaborative/in-person and independent work and will require the incumbent to be onsite 100% of the time.
