About

The Department of Environmental Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai seeks a highly motivated and dynamic researcher with a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree to join the Walker Lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Candidates should have a strong interest in obesity, the microbiome and clinical research. An understanding of modern microbiome analysis principles is beneficial and prior bioinformatic experience working with omics data analysis (WGS metagenomics, RNA-seq), microbiology or systems biology, as demonstrated through past research accomplishments, would be ideal.

The candidate will be mentored by Dr. Walker and will interact with other faculty investigators and collaborators at Mount Sinai. The candidate can expect to receive solid training in a range of fields pertaining to clinical research, e.g., study design and development, learning statistical methods relevant to environmental and clinical research and understanding biological complexity and epidemiological approaches. Moreover, the candidate will get first-hand experience in clinical research. Furthermore, he/she will have access to a wealth of resources including high-quality clinical data, a state-of-the-art high-performance computing facility, and the latest sequencing platforms. Individuals will have opportunities to learn new methodologies in exposure science, complex mixtures data analysis, and exposomics, as applied to studies of the microbiome in children and adults. The candidate will contribute to existing research areas and will have opportunities to develop new research hypotheses and studies building upon existing population and patient cohorts and microbiome data.

What We Do

The Walker Lab mission is to substantially contribute to resolving the global problem of obesity and diabetes. We are focused on elucidating the causes of, and treatments for, obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic diseases such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children and adults. The prevalence of these diseases is astounding, and their complexity requires novel, non-traditional approaches accounting for environmental, genetic and metabolic factors. A particular interest is in the relationships between environmental factors (diet), microbiome and host health and the identification of modifiers of the gut microbiome to establish targets for clinical interventions that improve health outcomes and prevent disease.

Current research directions in the group include: 1] the role of excess fructose consumption on the human gut microbiome and cardiometabolic disease risk, 2] the early establishment of the infant gut microbiome and the role of intestinal bacteria in the etiology of obesity and related diseases, 3] The effect of persistent environmental pollutants on the breastmilk microbiome, breastmilk metabolites and the infant gut microbiome, and 4] the role of environmental pollutants on cardiometabolic health Additionally, we are developing clinical exercise and dietary studies to improve metabolic health and the applicant will have the opportunity to work on ongoing clinical research efforts in the Human Metabolism and Physiology Lab, part of the NY Regional Diabetes Research Center.

Qualifications

Requirements

A doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) is required. PhD candidates with soon anticipated graduation are also encouraged to apply. The applicant should be proficient with programming languages commonly used in data science (R, Python) and analyses, and have reasonable familiarity with standard bioinformatics packages for processing and analyzing ’omics datasets.

Additional qualifications include excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills, high enthusiasm and curiosity about science, and a strong ability to independently and creatively solve research problems while working effectively with the principal investigator and lab colleagues.

Responsibilities

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this position will be to support ongoing investigations and the development of new studies related to the lab research directions. This includes data collection, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant preparation. Training is geared towards preparing for a NIH K grant application or equivalent, and it is our intention that this work will lead to an NIH career development application submitted in year 2-3 of the fellowship. Fellows will attend and present at division/departmental seminars and relevant research conferences. This position may include opportunities for domestic and international travel.

+ May assist in preparation of grant proposals, but will not be responsible for generating grant funds

+ May contribute to publications and presentations as author or co-author

+ Analyze, interpret, summarize, and compile data

+ Develop figures, searches scientific literature, assists in writing manuscripts, and presents data at local and national meetings

+ May develop, adapt, and implement new research studies and proposals

+ Lead and contribute to the generation of publications, grant applications, and protocols

+ Network with our national and international collaborators and represent our work at conferences and scientific meetings

Compensation Statement

Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $72500 - $80000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
