Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 (commensurate with experience)
Binghamton University's Office of Media and Public Relations seeks a Brand Strategist. The primary role of the Brand Strategist will be to enhance the visibility of Binghamton University as a Carnegie R1 classified (highest research activity) university both within the United States and internationally. This is a new position that will report to the Senior Director of Media and Public Relations.
The successful application for this position will be familiar with the landscape of higher education, skilled at team work, and able to build a comprehensive and multifaceted strategy of communication. Strategic planning will begin with coming to understand a wide variety of faculty members' research achievements and their respective fields as well as beyond the world of academic research, scholarship, and creative activities. This understanding will become the basis for the Brand Strategist to create engaging and accessible content that diverse audiences, including colleges and universities, media outlets, policymakers, potential collaborators, potential graduate students, and members of the wider public can appreciate. It is critical that a variety of professional and non-professional audiences are able to grasp the depth, scope, and quality of research done at Binghamton University. The ultimate goal of this position is to substantially raise the profile of Binghamton as a premier public university that generates research, scholarship, and creative activities of exceptional quality and major significance.
Responsibilities include:
+ Collaborate with faculty members to understand their research projects and objectives, motivate faculty members to be more active in promoting their research findings across a diverse landscape of media and target audiences.
+ Develop comprehensive media strategies to promote faculty research initiatives across multiple channels, including traditional media (print, television, radio) and digital platforms (website, social media, podcasts, video, newsletters).
+ Track and evaluate the university's performance across multiple higher education ranking systems (such as QS World Rankings, THE World Rankings, and other relevant surveys), providing data-driven insights and making a strategic communication plan to enhance institutional reputation and visibility among peer institutions.
+ Provide media training and support to faculty members to enhance their communication skills and media presence.
+ Create and edit engaging and compelling content to showcase faculty research, including press releases, articles, blog posts, and multimedia materials.
+ Collaborate closely with video editors to create compelling visual content highlighting research and creative activities. This partnership ensures complex information is distilled into engaging videos for diverse audiences.
+ Build relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers to secure coverage and placements for faculty research.
+ Monitor media coverage and rankings to track the impact of communication efforts, providing regular reports and analysis to stakeholders.
+ Collaborate with internal teams to integrate faculty research initiatives into broader institutional messaging and branding efforts.
+ Write and distribute news releases that highlight new research, events, programming, grants, and other important campus news.
+ Collaborate with faculty to develop op-eds, scripts, story pitches, and more that highlight faculty expertise and research, while enhancing Binghamton's profile.
+ Monitor services like Qwoted and Newswise to respond to media queries for faculty experts, develop responses with faculty, and coordinate interviews with news outlets.
+ Represent the University on a wide range of social media outlets by monitoring and responding to posts, creating social content, and leveraging posts to increase engagement.
+ Monitor and respond to online reputational issues facing the University and strategically craft statements to resolve and manage crisis situations online. Prepare for and respond to potential reputational crises.
+ Provide support for updating the University's faculty webpages.
+ Assist in developing long-term media and social media strategies.
+ Create visual content highlighting breaking research news and other noteworthy subjects for sharing on social media and packaging with news releases.
+ Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging media relations and research communication technologies.
Job Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree
+ At least 2 years of relevant experience in media strategy and content production
+ Experience writing, proofreading, and editing for media
+ Experience creating material for different audiences while maintaining a unified voice
+ Knowledge of social media listening tools and reputation management practices
+ Ability to work collaboratively and independently
+ Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Preferred:
+ Experience in a communication or writing based discipline
+ Experience in higher education
+ Experience developing strategic approaches to media
+ Experience breaking down complex stories into pitches for national news media
