    Definition & Duties

     

    Under supervision, performs tasks which may be routine and repetitive, but are usually not readily learned and require some independent judgement and policy interpretation. Reviews daily run reports to assign reason/condition codes and service level codes. Interacts with clients and insurance companies both in person and/or over the telephone to inform them of basic departmental policies and procedures, or determines the proper person to whom to refer them for assistance.

     

    Knowledge of & Ability to

     

    + Current office procedures and practices

    + Multiple types of insurance and medical coverage necessary for claims submission and reviews and appeals

    + Basic medical terminology

    + Medical billing to include ICD10 and HCPC/service level codes

    + HIPAA regulations

    + English language to include grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation

    Ability to:

    + Perform clerical tasks with a high degree of speed and accuracy

    + Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner

    + Provide customer service that is courteous and responsive

    + Make routine bookkeeping entries and complete business forms

    + Learn, apply, and communicate departmental policies and procedures

    + Be detail-oriented and accurate while performing duties

    + Maintain confidentiality of information as appropriate

    + Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, department heads, other county employees, agencies, and members of the public

    + Handle low to moderate levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position

    Minimum Education, Training & Experience & Special Requirements

     

    High school graduate or equivalent AND one year of clerical experience required preferably in a medical office/clinic setting; OR any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge of medical billing practice preferred.

     

    Special requirements: CPR certification. Ambulance Coder certification required within one year of hire and renewed annually thereafter.

    Specific Duties

    To be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.

     

    The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

     

    + Review daily run report to assign reason/condition codes & HCPC/service level codes consistent with NAAC and Medicare guidelines.

    + Provides information to authorized agencies and/or authorized personnel.

    + Reviews patient care reports and billing sheets prepared by the Ambulance Department staff verifying charges, billing information, insurance information, and patient demographic information ensuring correct entry into the billing system.

    + Prepares insurance forms (Medicare/BCBS\Title XIX).

    + Assists clients over the phone and /or in person with questions, payments, record requests, insurance, denials and appeals. Refers callers, greets office visitors, and takes messages.

    + Assists agencies working with clients in filing claims (Human Services, Health Care agencies, State of Iowa).

    + Assists Billing Specialist in the follow-up of unpaid claims.

    + Works with the Ambulance Director in managing the state Offset Program in collecting outstanding debt.

    + Maintains confidential medical and insurance records.

    + Reports data elements required by the State of Iowa.

    + Performs general clerical duties such as photocopying, filing, faxing, typing, deliveries, scanning and processing mail.

    + Files reports with attorneys, insurance companies, and State or Federal agencies requesting information of client transports. Obtains proper legal consent forms when indicated prior to the release of information.

    + Uses a skip tracing service to verify or find additional patient information used in billing and filing claims.

    + Provides back-up for basic Administrative Billing Specialist duties and other office staff as needed.

    + Cross-trains with co-workers and assists other departments as needed such as processing claims.

    + Participates in training/educational opportunities and work-related meetings as required.

    + Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices and the collective bargaining agreement.

    + Attends work regularly at the designated place and time.
