The Advanced Research team (ADR) is an interdisciplinary science team comprised of economists, data scientists, psychologists, and research scientists. Strategically embedded in the People Analytics, Technology, and Operations Excellence (PATOE) organization, ADR is committed to creating innovative, science-backed, and scalable programs that support our 1+ million employees worldwide.
We are seeking an Economist to join our team and advance our mission of improving the employee experience and Amazon's efforts to become Earth's Best Employer. The Economist will lead new pioneering ideas from concept to reality, and in this role—new bold ideas are always welcome. Your scope will encompass the employee experience from end-to-end. You will partner directly with scientists, engineers, and leaders across the broader People, Experience, and Technology (PXT) organization and Global Operations to design solutions, pilot them, validate their effectiveness, and scale those that demonstrate, ultimately empowering our front-line employees.
Key job responsibilities
• Develop robust, causally grounded solutions using deep expertise in causal inference to address complex business challenges.
• Distill complex business problems into specific and testable hypotheses, work with large datasets to test these hypotheses, develop actionable data-driven insights, and effectively communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Design pilot programs and measure their impact and ROI to ensure strategic resource allocation by scaling successful pilots that maximize employee experience improvements.
• Proactively identify science-backed and scalable opportunities to address employee experience defects, partner closely with business, scientific, and tech experts to deploy solutions at scale.
• Work independently to produce robust technical artifacts and contribute to the science community through publications and conferences.
• Drive the roadmap for key projects, ensuring strategic alignment and progress toward goals.

We are a close-knit and multidisciplinary science team sitting in PATOE, a technology, data, analytics, and science organization that supports over a million employees globally. We have a broad mix of domain specialists (Economics, Data Science, Research Science, I/O Psychology), experience levels and tenures. We emphasize supporting new members, knowledge creation, collaboration, and mentorship. Basic Qualifications
- PhD in economics or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of industry, consulting, government, or academic research experience
- Knowledge of at least one statistical software package such as R, Stata, Matlab, SAS
- Experience with handling of large datasets
- Experience in data mining (SQL, ETL, data warehouse, etc.) and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets
- Experience working with very large, disparate data sets and big data tools such as Spark

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $212,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
